Vertical petals and Marian icons on the churchyards of Terlizzi
In the heart of the Bari Metropolitan City, in Terlizzi—known as the City of Flowers for its historic floricultural vocation—a new event debuts in 2026, rewriting the rules of ephemeral petal art. The Vertical Flower Festival does not spread its flower carpets on the pavement, as per the centuries-old tradition of Italian flower festivals, but elevates them vertically, turning them into true suspended paintings.
The choice of verticality is the event's hallmark: floral tableaux are hosted in the churchyards and sacred spaces of the city's churches, where petals precisely fill geometric and figurative designs. They are created by Terlizzi's florists and flower growers, who work with flowers cultivated in the region, an economic and cultural asset of one of Puglia's floriculture capitals.
The theme of this first edition is Marian icons: an artistic and spiritual path that unites popular devotion, local identity, and the universal language of art. The compositions engage with the city's religious architecture, inviting residents and visitors to rediscover places of worship in a new light.
Alongside the flower displays, the program includes guided tours of Terlizzi's places of worship and cultural spaces, designed as a thread to rediscover—or discover for the first time—the artistic and spiritual heritage preserved by the city. The initiative stems from a collaboration with local organizations dedicated to the enhancement of cultural heritage.
The Vertical Flower Festival is promoted by the Magia di Petali association and is part of the Summer in Terlizzi 2026 program, a calendar of over forty events including culture, music, tradition, and entertainment that brings parks, squares, churches, and streets in the province of Bari to life. A debut aiming to become a new fixed appointment in the Terlizzi September calendar.
The first edition of the Vertical Flower Festival debuts in Terlizzi on September 19-20, 2026, as part of the Summer in Terlizzi 2026 program. The event, conceived by the Magia di Petali association with president Pasquale Angarano, brings the art of petals to the facades and churchyards of the city's churches, with Marian icons as the central theme. Collaboration with local cultural entities enriches the event with guided tours of Terlizzi's places of worship and art spaces.
The first edition of the Vertical Flower Festival takes place on the weekend of September 19-20, 2026. The detailed program—including the list of participating churchyards, opening hours, and the schedule of guided tours—will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
