The vibrant, youth-led carnival in the heart of the Agrigento province
The Lucca Sicula Carnival is a relatively new but deeply cherished popular festival held annually in the small town of Lucca Sicula, nestled in the hinterland of the Agrigento province, Sicily. Though it only began in 2024, the carnival has quickly become a highly anticipated event that bridges generations, local associations, and institutions.
The carnival is organized by the Sipario 4 Cultural Association, with the patronage of the Municipality of Lucca Sicula. The heart of the festivities lies in the costumed groups created by local schools, which bring the evenings to life with engaging choreography, meticulously crafted costumes, and impressive stage effects. The parades wind through the town center, turning the streets into a grand open-air stage.
A major highlight of recent editions has been the creation of the first allegorical float, built entirely by the local youth. This float was the result of months of collective effort, involving the young participants in every step—from design and papier-mâché work to composing a custom soundtrack. More than just a display, the float has become a symbol of creativity, unity, and local pride, fostering a strong sense of community.
Beyond the parades, the program features moments of conviviality, including free tastings of local specialties like bread and sausage. The event concludes with an awards ceremony celebrating the best costumed groups and performances. The Lucca Sicula Carnival stands as a shining example of a grassroots festival where families, volunteers, and young people work together to enrich the social fabric of this Sicilian village.
The 2026 edition of the Lucca Sicula Carnival, the third in the event's history, took place from February 17 to 19, 2026. The opening night saw a great turnout, featuring a parade of six costumed groups from local schools, brought to life by engaging choreography and carefully crafted stage effects.
The most significant novelty was the completion of the first allegorical float built by the community's youth, the result of three months of work involving design, papier-mâché construction, and the creation of a dedicated soundtrack. Despite adverse weather conditions forcing the final event indoors, the festival maintained its spirit of unity and creativity.
The Lucca Sicula Carnival takes place along the streets of the town center of Lucca Sicula, in the province of Agrigento (ZIP 92010), Sicily.
The event is held during the Carnival season, typically between February and early March. Dates vary annually based on the calendar.
Access to the parades and public square events is free of charge.
