A night of free guided tours through the historic churches of Novi Ligure
The Long Night of the Churches is a national event that, on a single evening in early summer, invites you to cross the threshold of churches, oratories, and places of worship that are usually less frequented, transforming them into spaces of encounter, art, and silence. In Novi Ligure, an important center in the Province of Alessandria in Piedmont, the event is curated by the "Antiche Chiese di Novi Ligure" group, the Santa Teresa di Calcutta Pastoral Community, local confraternities, and the Società Storica del Novese, with the support of the cultural office of the Diocese of Tortona.
For one night, doors remain open until late: from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM, free guided tours take place hourly, allowing visitors to discover multiple locations throughout the evening. Visitors are accompanied by diocesan volunteers and students from the tourism program of the "Ciampini – Boccardo" institute, who put their training to use by recounting the history and artistic treasures of the city.
Each edition revolves around a theme that serves as a common thread for the tours and narratives proposed at the various sites. In Novi Ligure, the route touches on places of great value such as the Oratorio della Maddalena, the Pieve, the Church of San Pietro, and the Museum of the Società Storica del Novese, a treasure chest of the territory's religious and civic memory. Amidst Renaissance frescoes, sculptural groups, and testimonies of ancient devotions, the evening becomes a journey into spirituality and local identity.
Admission is free, and no reservation is required, except where space capacity demands it. The Long Night of the Churches is designed for families, art enthusiasts, the curious, and tourists who wish to experience Novi Ligure in an unusual light, when the falling evening gives its churches a particularly evocative atmosphere.
