The village festival in honor of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, between the Romanesque Pieve and the town square
In the calendar of the small town of Viguzzolo, located in the province of Alessandria just a few kilometers from Tortona, the Patronal Feast is the most cherished event of the year. Celebrated in September in honor of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the town's patron saint commemorated on September 8th, it transforms the historic center into a vibrant meeting place for the entire Val Curone community.
This is not an event built for mass crowds; it is a true village festival where people gather in the streets and squares, and where local associations and merchants join forces to bring the days to life. The heart of the secular celebrations beats around Piazza della Libertà, where the traditional tombola with prize draws—the highlight of the Sunday festivities—has been held for years.
The true treasure of Viguzzolo is the Romanesque Pieve of Santa Maria, one of the most significant examples of Romanesque architecture in southern Piedmont. During the weekend of the Patronal Feast, the Pieve opens with extended hours and offers free guided tours, thanks to the volunteers of the Associazione Culturale Viguzzolese, allowing residents and visitors to discover a monument of rare beauty and great historical value.
In recent years, the cultural program has enriched the festival with photography exhibitions, book presentations, and the Pieve in Musica chamber music festival, which brings great classical music under the church's thousand-year-old vaults.
The Viguzzolo Patronal Feast is the ideal occasion for those wishing to experience an authentic slice of Piedmontese village life: religious tradition, conviviality, culture, and that deep bond with the territory that makes festivals in the Alessandria area so special. It is an event that weaves together faith, history, and social life, reflecting a community that loves to gather around its patron saint and its Pieve.
