About Living Via Crucis

Every Good Friday, the historic center of Grottolella, a small village in the Irpinia region near Avellino, transforms into an open-air stage for the Living Via Crucis. Dozens of participants of all ages, led by the Catholic Action and the local parish, re-enact the Stations of the Passion amidst narrow alleys, stone stairways, and ancient walls. It is a journey of light, shadow, and silence where faith intertwines with popular theater and the identity of an entire community.

A Good Friday that unites the whole village

In Grottolella, a town of just under two thousand inhabitants perched at the foot of Monte Toro in the middle Sabato Valley, the Easter season has a fixed appointment: the Living Via Crucis. On the afternoon of Good Friday, this Irpinian village in the province of Avellino pauses its daily routine and sets off on a journey. The procession begins at Piazza Municipio and winds through the streets of the historic center, passing through Piazza Angelo Maglio, climbing alleys, and ancient stone walls, leading to the final representation of Calvary.

This is not a show built for outside audiences; it is the community telling its own story. The village streets become an open-air stage, while houses, doorways, and staircases serve as a natural backdrop for a narrative that everyone knows but which takes on new nuances every year.

Who organizes it

The event is promoted by the Catholic Action of Grottolella together with the local parish, involving village associations and civil society. Behind the evening lies a long team effort: months of rehearsals, costume care, lighting and set design preparation, and the spiritual guidance of the parish priest. Educators guide the young participants step by step, making the Via Crucis the most visible moment of an educational, formative, and social commitment that the association carries out throughout the year.

Participants of all ages

One of the distinctive features of the Grottolella Living Via Crucis is its cross-generational participation: children, teenagers, young people, and adults all take part, each with a role in the scenes of the Passion. Many of the protagonists are young people from the community, joined by more experienced actors who return to the same character every year. It is a generational passing of the torch that explains the longevity of this tradition, now a staple of the local Easter calendar.

  • Itinerant performance throughout the historic center with multiple stations
  • Period costumes and sets created by local volunteers
  • Play of light and shadow accompanying the fall of evening
  • Free admission, event open to residents and visitors

The Irpinian context

Passion re-enactments are common throughout Campania, particularly in the Irpinian hinterland, where Good Friday retains a strong collective dimension. In Grottolella, the setting is provided by the medieval fabric of the village, dominated by the castle and the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, of Norman origin, also known as the Church of Saint Egidio, the patron saint celebrated on September 1st. The town is known in Irpinia as the village of hazelnuts and the home of the white apple, products that reflect an still-vibrant agricultural vocation.

How to experience it

Visitors will find a free, intimate, and visually striking event, quite different from large-scale tourist re-enactments. It is advisable to arrive in the square with some time to spare, as the procession starts promptly and the best spots along the alleys fill up quickly. Early spring weather can affect the proceedings: over the years, organizers have often had to contend with rain and cold without ever canceling the event.

The Living Via Crucis fits naturally into an Easter itinerary among the towns of the Avellino province, just a few kilometers from the capital and easily reachable from Naples and the rest of Campania.
