The living re-enactment of the Passion through the streets of Carlentini
The Living Via Crucis is one of the most deeply felt events of Holy Week in Carlentini, a town in the province of Syracuse, Sicily. It is a sacred itinerant performance that stages the Passion and death of Jesus through the streets of the town: a journey of faith and popular theater that draws a large turnout of the faithful and curious along the town's streets every year.
The event boasts a history spanning over forty years: 2025 marked the forty-first edition, a sign of a tradition deeply rooted in the community. The event is promoted and coordinated by the Catholic Action of the Mother Church of Carlentini, which involves the parish's youth and adults in preparing the scenes, costumes, and meditations each year.
The performance unfolds through the fourteen stations of the Via Crucis, alternating Gospel readings, meditations, and hymns. The performers, dressed in period costumes, retrace the central moments of the Passion: from the agony in the garden to the crucifixion. The route passes through the main streets of the historic center, involving the Mother Church and the town squares, in a collected and evocative atmosphere that becomes more intense as evening falls.
More than just a show, the Living Via Crucis is experienced by the people of Carlentini as an authentic experience of shared spirituality. The young members of Catholic Action are the protagonists, offering a testimony of intimate and participatory faith. The event is part of the broader calendar of Holy Week celebrations in the parish, which culminate in the rites of the Easter Triduum and the joy of Easter.
Situated on the Leontine heights in the Sicily Region, Carlentini maintains a strong bond with popular religious traditions. The Living Via Crucis represents one of the highest points of this intangible heritage, capable of uniting the entire community of the municipality around a rite handed down from generation to generation.
The 2026 Living Via Crucis in Carlentini was held on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at 8:00 PM, as part of the Mother Church's Holy Week celebrations. The procession of performers moved through the city's main streets, including Via Roma, Piazza Diaz, and Via XX Settembre, concluding in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, in front of the War Memorial.
The performance was part of a rich calendar of celebrations: from Palm Sunday (March 29) to the rites of the Easter Triduum, leading up to Easter on April 5. As per tradition, the parish's youth and adults brought the fourteen stations to life with readings, meditations, and hymns.
