The sacred representation of the Passion of Christ in the Nebrodi village
The Living Passion - The Son of Man is the sacred performance that brings Montagnareale to life every spring, a small municipality in the Metropolitan City of Messina overlooking the Gulf of Patti and nestled in the foothills of the Nebrodi mountains. During Holy Week, the entire historic center of the town turns into an open-air theater where the community, gathered around the Parish and the municipal administration, brings to life one of the most deeply felt spiritual events in the region.
The staging retraces the final days of the life of Jesus Christ: the triumphal entry into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, the arrest in the Garden of Olives, the trial before Pilate and Caiaphas, the condemnation, the climb to Calvary, the crucifixion, and finally the resurrection. It is not merely a play, but an emotional and devotional journey that involves both spectators and performers, accompanied by music, lighting effects, and meticulously detailed settings.
The representation is brought to life by over sixty performers, including lead roles, supporting actors, and a large cast of townspeople made up of the residents of Montagnareale themselves. Historical costumes, widespread scenery, and the setup of various stations along the village streets recreate the atmosphere of Jerusalem two thousand years ago, in a striking blend of popular theater and religious devotion.
Recurring year after year and deeply rooted in the town's identity, the Living Passion attracts visitors and devotees from neighboring towns in the Nebrodi and the Messina Tyrrhenian coast. The event, free and open to all, represents a moment of community cohesion for Montagnareale and a way to promote Sicily's heritage of folk traditions, as well as an opportunity to discover an authentic village also known for its chestnut and cherry production.
The 2026 Living Passion of Montagnareale, titled "The Son of Man", was held on Sunday, April 12, 2026, in the evening, following a change from the originally announced date of April 1. Along the streets of the historic center of the Messina municipality, over sixty performers re-enacted the Passion of Christ, from the entry into Jerusalem to the crucifixion and resurrection. The immersive nature of the production was confirmed, featuring historical costumes, music, and scenic effects, in an event that attracts numerous spectators and devotees from the Nebrodi area every year.
Montagnareale can be reached via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, taking the Patti exit and continuing on the internal roads towards the Nebrodi (about 50 km west of Messina). The nearest train station is Patti-San Piero Patti, on the Tyrrhenian line.
The performance takes place in the historic center of the town during Holy Week, generally in the evening (around 9:00 PM). Admission is free.
We recommend comfortable clothing for walking through the village streets and a jacket for the evening. For information, you can contact the municipal offices at +39 0941 315252.
