The Nativity comes to life in the alleys of the Serro District, in one of Sicily's most beautiful villages
Every year, during the Christmas holidays, the Serro District of Montalbano Elicona comes alive with shepherds, artisans, housewives, and performers to bring to life one of the island's most famous living nativities. Set in the oldest part of the medieval village, in the province of Messina, the performance has been awarded multiple times as the best living nativity in Sicily and attracts thousands of visitors to the historic center.
The strength of the event lies in its authenticity: in the Serro District, nothing is artificial. The stone alleys, houses, and ancient dwellings of the village become the real backdrop for the Nativity, without any fake scenery. Among arches, stairways, and small squares, scenes of life from the past take shape, brought to life by the enthusiastic participation of children, young people, the elderly, and new residents of the town.
Along the path, you will encounter the ancient professions of the village: the baker at the wood-fired oven, the blacksmith, artisans in their workshops, and housewives busy making ricotta, cheeses, and provola. Every corner, every house, and every hut, as the municipal administration reminds us, tells the stories of the citizens of the past, offering visitors the slow rhythm of rural Sicily.
Running concurrently with the nativity is the Montalbano Food Fest: along the streets of the historic center, stalls and small spaces offer the flavors of the town, both sweet and savory, accompanied by homey scents and music. Tasting the local products is an integral part of the experience and enriches the visit.
Montalbano Elicona is part of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy circuit and is dominated by its Swabian-Aragonese castle. Nearby lies the evocative Argimusco site, with its megaliths, an ideal destination to complete your visit to the village during the days of the nativity. The event is sponsored by the Sicilian Region and the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy.
The 24th edition of the Living Nativity of Montalbano Elicona was held on the three evenings of December 26 and 30, 2025, and January 6, 2026, with the route opening at 5:30 PM in the Serro District.
As per tradition, the village performers brought the scenes of the Nativity and ancient crafts to life along the alleys of the medieval core, in a setting where nothing is artificial. Concurrently, the Montalbano Food Fest took place, featuring tastings of the town's typical flavors. The event, with free admission, confirmed the patronage of the Sicilian Region and the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy.
