The Nativity comes to life in the alleys of the Monti Dauni village
The Living Nativity of Castelluccio Valmaggiore brings the Nativity to life among the alleys and stone stairways of the historic center, one of the most evocative villages in the Monti Dauni, in the province of Foggia. For several evenings between late December and Epiphany, the town turns into a grand open-air nativity scene: costumed actors, workshops of ancient trades, fires, soft lighting, and the sacred representation of the birth of Jesus guide visitors along a path that winds through the heart of the village, from Via Salita Borgo to the streets of the old town.
The event is not just a religious celebration, but a true recovery of collective memory. The community of Castelluccio Valmaggiore has rediscovered this tradition after years of absence, involving citizens of all ages in the preparation of scenes, costumes, and settings. The result is a choral narrative where the village itself becomes the stage: the stone houses, arches, and medieval alleys provide a natural backdrop for the performance, restoring the atmosphere of villages from times past.
Castelluccio Valmaggiore is a small town in the Monti Dauni, in the Subappennino Dauno of northern Puglia. The town preserves an ancient tower, the only remaining evidence of the Byzantine castle that once dominated the valley. This thousand-year-old past makes the village a perfect setting for a living nativity: the stones, underpasses, and atmosphere of the historic center amplify the evocative power of the representation, offering visitors an immersive experience that combines spirituality and landscape.
The living nativity is promoted by the Pro Loco of Castelluccio Valmaggiore together with the parish of San Giovanni and local associations. The sacred representation is part of a wider calendar of Christmas events in the town, enriched by local gastronomic traditions, such as the famous Christmas Eve pettole. It is an event designed for families and those who wish to experience Christmas in an authentic atmosphere, far from the pace of big cities.
The performances on January 4 and 6, 2026 concluded the first modern edition of the living nativity of Castelluccio Valmaggiore, bringing the Nativity back to the alleys of the Monti Dauni village during the days of Epiphany. The route, set up along Via Salita Borgo and the streets of the historic center, led visitors through the scenes of the sacred representation, among workshops of ancient trades, lights, and Christmas atmosphere. The event on January 6th coincided with the feast of Epiphany, a moment particularly felt by the community.
The living nativity, inaugurated on December 26, 2025, was repeated with two performances in the medieval village:
The route wound along Via Salita Borgo and the alleys of the historic center, with costumed actors, Nativity scenes, and reconstructions of ancient trades.
The performance takes place in the historic center of Castelluccio Valmaggiore (FG), along Via Salita Borgo and the alleys of the medieval village.
During the Christmas period, between late December and Epiphany (January 6th), in the evening (approximately from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM).
Admission is free.
