A one-kilometre sacred representation by torchlight in the Tuscan Valtiberina
The Living Nativity of Le Ville di Monterchi is one of the most beloved Christmas events in the province of Arezzo and the entire eastern Tuscany region. Set in the hamlet of Le Ville, in the municipality of Monterchi, near the border with Umbria, the event is organised by the Venite Adoremus Association, which involves the entire local community every year in preparing a re-enactment of great emotional and visual impact.
The route stretches for about one kilometre through the streets and fields of the village, transformed for the occasion into a Judean village at the time of Jesus' birth. The 57 scenes that make up the itinerary are brought to life by over 250 costumed performers: artisans, blacksmiths, bakers, shepherds, Roman soldiers, and commoners recreate the trades and daily activities of two millennia ago.
The most distinctive aspect of the event is its lighting: at sunset, the village lights are turned off, and the entire route is illuminated solely by torches, braziers, and fires. This scenographic choice creates an intimate and contemplative atmosphere, capable of transporting the visitor into a timeless dimension.
Along the way, the public encounters meticulously detailed reconstructions, including:
The Living Nativity of Le Ville is the result of the voluntary work of dozens of residents who, month after month, build the sets, sew the costumes, and step into the roles of the characters. It is an event deeply rooted in the identity of the Tuscan Valtiberina, a land of folk traditions and ancient religious devotion, just a few kilometres from the famous Madonna del Parto fresco by Piero della Francesca, housed in Monterchi itself.
Suitable for families, children, and lovers of Christmas traditions, the Monterchi living nativity combines spiritual depth with a spectacular setting. The visit, lasting about an hour, is an immersive experience that is well worth the trip to this quiet corner of Tuscany on the border with Umbria.
The 2025-2026 edition confirmed the established formula of the event organised by the Venite Adoremus Association. The route, about one kilometre long in the hamlet of Le Ville, featured 57 scenes with over 250 costumed performers, from Herod's palace and the oil mill to the Nativity scene.
