The start of the Christmas season in the Franco-Provençal village of Celle di San Vito

At the end of November, when the Monti Dauni mountains are touched by the first chill of winter, Celle di San Vito — the least populous municipality in Puglia, in the province of Foggia — launches its Christmas season with «Lights of Resilience». This is no ordinary lighting ceremony; it is a collective ritual that unites the entire community around a deeply meaningful act: the simultaneous illumination of all the village's festive lights.
Celle di San Vito has only a handful of inhabitants and, together with the nearby village of Faeto, forms the only Franco-Provençal linguistic island in Southern Italy, a heritage that is officially recognized and protected. Perched about 46 kilometers from Foggia, the village traces its roots back to the Middle Ages, when a colony of speakers from beyond the Alps settled here under Angevin rule. It is within this context of fragile, ancient identity that the event takes on its deepest value: resisting depopulation and asserting the will to remain.
The highlight arrives in the late afternoon, when the Christmas tree in front of the Town Hall, the entrances to homes, the stone staircases, the arches, the post office, the squares, and the village streets all light up in a single instant. Every light, every garland, and every sprig of mistletoe becomes a symbol of shared hope. In the most recent edition, the tree was decorated with baubles featuring the faces of children born in the village over the last decade: a poetic way to remember that, despite the numbers, Celle di San Vito continues to live and renew itself.
The festivities revolve around the lighting ceremony, animating the entire holiday period: tastings of typical products from the Monti Dauni, a Santa Claus house for the little ones, a traditional nativity scene featuring local village landmarks, and a Christmas market. It is an intimate, village-style Christmas where the community gathers and welcomes visitors with warmth.
«Lights of Resilience» is also a small example of environmental awareness: the decorations use low-energy LED lights, equipped with timers that switch them off around midnight. Beauty and sustainability coexist in a festival that aims to be responsible as well as evocative. For those seeking an authentic Christmas experience far from the crowds, this Franco-Provençal village in the Monti Dauni offers an atmosphere unique in all of Puglia.
The Municipality of Celle di San Vito has not yet announced the official date for the 2026 edition of «Lights of Resilience». Historically, the simultaneous lighting of the village's festive decorations takes place on the last Sunday of November, featuring the illumination of the tree in front of the Town Hall, the Santa Claus house, the traditional nativity scene, and tastings of typical products from the Monti Dauni. As soon as the administration releases the dates and program, this page will be updated.
Celle di San Vito is located in the Monti Dauni, about 46 km from Foggia. By car, it can be reached via the SS90 road towards the mountain villages; the nearest train station is Foggia, from where you can continue by car along the provincial roads winding up towards Faeto and Celle.
The lighting ceremony traditionally takes place on the last Sunday of November in the late afternoon; the lights and Christmas activities continue throughout the holiday season.
Admission is free.
The village is at a high altitude: warm clothing is recommended. Don't miss a walk in the surrounding woods and a visit to Faeto, the other Franco-Provençal town.
