About Lecce Carnival

The Lecce Carnival brings the Salento capital to life with over two weeks of masked festivities, colorful parades, and entertainment for all ages. From neighborhood community centers to the squares of the historic center, the city-wide program organized by the municipal administration fills Piazza Sant'Oronzo with themed floats, roaming street bands, musical performances, and the traditional Pentolaccia with chiacchiere. A free, inclusive Carnival that brings together seniors, families, and children in a typically Baroque atmosphere of joy.

Carnival in the Baroque Capital

Every February, the Lecce Carnival transforms the capital of Salento into a grand open-air stage. Amidst the Lecce stone facades and the squares of the historic center, the city enjoys weeks of masked parades, roaming music, and performances that reach every neighborhood. It is a widespread and popular Carnival, designed to be experienced in the streets, free of charge, and open to both residents and visitors.

A program for the whole city

The event is coordinated by the Lecce Municipal Administration, which curates a calendar each year designed to engage every age group. Alongside the major events in Piazza Sant'Oronzo — the city's beating heart, dominated by the patron saint's column and the remains of the Roman amphitheater — there are parties in neighborhood community centers, grand balls, initiatives dedicated to seniors and people with disabilities, and plenty of activities for the little ones.

  • Piazza Sant'Oronzo: parades, themed floats, and evening shows
  • Porta San Biagio and the Municipal Villa: masked processions for children and families
  • Marina di San Cataldo: the historic "Lu Carnevale camenatu" parade
  • Neighborhoods and community centers: grand balls, masked parties, and community gatherings

Salento traditions in costume

The Lecce Carnival maintains a strong connection to local folk culture: dialect names like "Lu Carnevale te na fiata" or "Lu Carnevale camenatu" evoke memories of celebrations from the past, while street bands and costumed groups bring music and color to the city streets. The grand finale with the Great Pentolaccia and the tasting of chiacchiere — the fried pastry that symbolizes Carnival throughout Puglia — is an unmissable tradition.

Why you should experience it

Experiencing Carnival in Lecce, in the province of Lecce, means discovering Salento in its most festive and communal spirit, far from the summer crowds. With masks, confetti, and performances, the city offers an authentic, family-friendly experience in one of the most beautiful historic centers in Southern Italy.

Lecce Carnival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Lecce Carnival took place from February 7 to 22 with a widespread calendar across squares, neighborhoods, and the Marina di San Cataldo. Masked parades for children, parties for seniors, street bands, musical shows in Piazza Sant'Oronzo, and the conclusion with the Great Pentolaccia enlivened the city for over two weeks, free of charge and open to everyone.

The Lecce Carnival 2026 was held from February 7 to 22 with a program organized by the municipal administration and spread throughout the city. The festival combined major events in the square with initiatives dedicated to neighborhoods, seniors, and families, confirming the popular and inclusive character of this Salento event.
