About Notti del Solengo

In the heart of the Cilento hinterland, Le Notti del Solengo transforms the Sessa Cilento sports field into a grand winter festival dedicated to wild boar, the 'King of the Woods'. For two days in December, the Gli Amici del Solengo Association serves traditional Cilento peasant dishes—cavatelli with wild boar ragù, pasta e fagioli, stew, and grilled sausage—paired with local wine, folk music, and storytelling. Admission is free, making it one of the few local festivals that braves the winter chill.

Le Notti del Solengo: Sessa Cilento's Winter Feast

Le Notti del Solengo is one of the few Cilento festivals that defies the winter calendar. While most village celebrations take place between July and August, this event chooses December, when the Cilento hinterland is at its most tranquil and conviviality moves under the heated tents. The stage is set at the Sessa Cilento Sports Field, a small town in the Province of Salerno, Campania, which transforms for two days into a massive communal kitchen dedicated to the region's culinary and cultural traditions.

Who is the «solengo»?

The festival's name is no coincidence. In hunter's parlance, the solengo is the adult male wild boar that lives in solitude, away from the pack: a shy animal that has become the symbol of the woods surrounding the valley. The organizers call it the King of the Woods, and its meat is the star of the festival menu. In Cilento, wild boar is not an exotic ingredient but a staple of peasant cuisine, deeply tied to forest life and the cold season.

At the table: Traditional dishes

The food stalls feature the great classics of the Cilento hinterland, prepared by local volunteers:

  • Cavatelli with wild boar ragù, the hand-rolled fresh pasta that is the hallmark of local cuisine
  • Pasta e fagioli, the quintessential humble dish of the Alento hills
  • Slow-cooked wild boar stew
  • Grilled sausage
  • Local Cilento wine to complete the meal

The stalls open in the evening on the first day and continue with lunch and dinner service, allowing families with children to participate without staying out too late.

Folk music, dance, and storytelling

Beyond gastronomy, the festival places great emphasis on oral culture and traditional music. The December 2025 edition featured Domenico Monaco, known as 'The Storyteller', and the group Rittantico, dedicated to the Cilento folk repertoire; Sunday concluded with Manuel Scarpitta's Folkband, while lunch was accompanied by G&G Music karaoke. It is a formula that blends tarantellas, traditional songs, and dance, turning the evening into something more than just a food festival: those who arrive for a plate of cavatelli almost always end up staying until the final tammurriata.

Sessa Cilento and its surroundings

With just over a thousand inhabitants spread across the hamlets of Casigliano, Castagneta, Felittopiano, San Mango, Santa Lucia, Valle, and Offoli, Sessa Cilento is a town in the hilly belt between the Alento valley and the Cilento coast. It is part of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and is located a short distance from the villages of Omignano, Serramezzana, and the coastline of Castellabate. The Mediterranean diet, of which Cilento is the birthplace, is not just a tourist slogan here—it is simply how people eat all year round, and it is exactly what this event showcases.

Who organizes the festival

Le Notti del Solengo is managed by the Associazione Gli Amici del Solengo APS, a local volunteer group also active in other town events—including the Felittopiano Beer Festival, organized alongside the Pro Loco Saxum—with the patronage of the Municipality of Sessa Cilento. Admission to the festival area is free: you only pay for what you consume at the stalls, following the classic formula of village festivals.
