The Saint Joseph bonfires in the historic center of Gioia del Colle
Every March 19th, the eve and day of Saint Joseph, the historic center of Gioia del Colle (Metropolitan City of Bari, Puglia) relives one of the oldest and most cherished traditions of Southern Italy: the fanòve, the great propitiatory bonfires that were once lit to warm the late winter air and wish for a bountiful harvest. Le Fanòve d'Sciò brings this collective ritual back to life, transforming it into a widespread festival that spans the squares and alleys of the ancient Gioiese core.
The heart of the event lies in the bonfires lit simultaneously at various points in the historic center: citizens and visitors gather around the flames in a convivial atmosphere that unites young and old. Along Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, fire acrobats perform spectacular shows, guiding the public from one fanòva to the next. The soundtrack is provided by folk music and traditional Apulian songs, enlivening the path between the fires.
The festival is also a journey through the rural flavors of the territory: food stalls offer typical dishes of Gioiese and Murgia cuisine, from cicerchie (chickling vetch) cooked in a pignata (clay pot) to zampino, accompanied by the renowned Primitivo di Gioia del Colle DOC, one of Puglia's most iconic red wines. Around the fires, stories, tastings, and moments of gathering strengthen the community's bond with its roots.
Established in 2023 by the Sciò Cultural Association with the patronage of the Municipality of Gioia del Colle, the event has quickly established itself as one of the most anticipated appointments on the city's calendar. The dialect name, Le Fanòve d'Sciò, refers to the bonfires (the fanòve) and the promoting association. To facilitate participation, a free shuttle bus service connects peripheral parking areas to the historic center, making the evening accessible and safe for everyone.
The fourth edition of Le Fanòve d'Sciò was held on Thursday, March 19, 2026, on Saint Joseph's Day, enlivening the historic center of Gioia del Colle with the traditional bonfire ritual.
Starting at 7:00 PM, the public enjoyed performances by fire acrobats along Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, before reaching the bonfire lighting points around 8:00 PM. The evening concluded late into the night amidst music, flavors, and conviviality.
