Three days of folk music, brigands, and Southern flavors in Giugliano in Campania

La Tammorra dei Briganti is one of the most beloved events in Giugliano in Campania, in the province of Naples. Every year in June, the gardens of the I Circolo in Piazza Gramsci transform into a grand space dedicated to Southern folk music, peasant traditions, and the historical memory of Southern brigandage. For three days, the city rediscovers its identity through the sound of the tammorra, the colors of period costumes, and the flavors of Southern cuisine.
The festival was born with the intent of sharing the history of the brigands and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies in a popular and engaging way. Conferences, presentations of Southern-themed books, and creative readings guide the public on a journey to rediscover their roots. A special place is reserved for Giambattista Basile, the writer from Giugliano and author of "Lo cunto de li cunti," with the fairy tales of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies coming to life through narrations such as "Cinderella" (La Gatta Cenerentola).
The heart of the event is Southern folk music: tammurriata, tarantella, and pizzica resonate every evening with concerts by groups from various parts of Southern Italy. The three evenings offer a rich program of live performances that invite dancing and involve audiences of all ages in an atmosphere of authentic, shared celebration.
Among the most anticipated events is the parade of brigands on horseback, featuring vintage carts and carriages, costumed performers, musicians, and tammurriata dancers who bring the route to life. Alongside the parade, the re-enactment of ancient Southern trades brings back traditional figures such as the knife grinder, the embroiderer, and the cooper, in a living fresco of peasant life from the past.
The food and wine section is not to be missed: stalls offer Southern specialties, from Neapolitan fried foods to traditional sweets, alongside creative craft markets and local products. It is the perfect opportunity to savor Southern folk cuisine and take home a handcrafted souvenir of the festival.
La Tammorra dei Briganti is also designed for children, with entertainment, games, and themed activities that make the event suitable for families. It is an appointment that unites adults and children in the spirit of the folk traditions of Campania and the entire Mezzogiorno.
