An off-road rally through the villages of the Subequana Valley
The La Subequana 4x4 Club Rally is an off-road event held every spring, starting from Molina Aterno, a small town in the province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo. The event is organized by the La Subequana 4x4 Off-Road Club, an association affiliated with the FIF (Italian Off-Road Federation) that brings together about forty enthusiasts from the local villages: Molina Aterno, Acciano, Succiano, San Lorenzo di Beffi, Roccapreturo, Castelvecchio Subequo, Raiano, Pratola, and other towns in the valley.
This is a classic rally with a tourist route guided by a paper road-book: crews follow an itinerary that crosses the territories of Molina Aterno, Acciano, San Benedetto in Perillis, and Fontecchio, navigating dirt roads, mountain trails, and views of the Subequana Valley. It is not a technical competition, but a day of tourist driving suitable for off-road enthusiasts who want to discover a lesser-known corner of the Abruzzo Apennines, not far from the Sirente-Velino Regional Park.
The rally combines a passion for 4x4 vehicles with the promotion of the local area: the day begins with a gathering in Piazza San Nicola in Molina Aterno, with breakfast and refreshments included in the entry fee. The initiative promotes the small towns of the Subequana Valley, an inland area of L'Aquila characterized by historic villages, nature, and traditions, offering participants the chance to travel along roads and trails usually far from the main tourist routes.
Established just a few years ago, the rally has become a staple in the Abruzzo off-road calendar. Editions take place every year in March, confirming the bond between the club and the towns of the valley. The event is reserved for FIF members and is included in the official calendar of the Italian Off-Road Federation.
The fourth edition was held on Sunday, March 15, 2026, in Molina Aterno (AQ), with a meeting point in Piazza San Nicola. Registration opened at 08:00 (closing at 10:00), with the first crew departing at 09:00 and the day concluding around 19:00.
