The Christmas nativity scene competition in Tornimparte, in the mountains of the L'Aquila region
In the heart of the Abruzzo Apennines, the municipality of Tornimparte, in the province of L'Aquila, celebrates one of its most cherished events every winter: the La Strada dei Presepi Competition. Organized by the Pro Loco of Tornimparte, the event spans the entire Christmas period, turning the municipal area into a widespread trail of Nativity scenes set up in homes, churches, schools, and along the streets of the local hamlets.
The event is structured into several competitive sections designed to involve the entire community and beyond. Alongside categories reserved for citizens and parishes of Tornimparte and the wider L'Aquila area, there is a dedicated space for local and surrounding schools. The photography section also holds great importance, open to national and international participants, which over the years has attracted works from various Italian regions and even abroad.
Juries visit the competing nativity scenes between late December and early January, evaluating attention to detail, originality, and the ability to convey the message of the nativity tradition. The top finishers in each section receive an award, while special recognition is given to schools and the most loyal participants who have been involved since the very first editions.
The symbolic heart of the competition is the Francesco Scardaci Trophy, awarded to the best representation across all categories. The trophy, which has reached numerous editions over time, is dedicated to the memory of a figure closely linked to the community and represents the highest honor of the event. The presentation takes place during the awards ceremony, hosted in the monumental church of San Panfilo, a splendid 13th-century building famous for its 15th-century frescoes by Saturnino Gatti.
La Strada dei Presepi is more than just a competition: it is a moment of sharing that strengthens the sense of community and enhances the cultural and religious heritage of Abruzzo. Included among the initiatives promoted by the Unpli for the preservation of the cultural roots of Italian villages, the event attracts visitors and nativity enthusiasts every year, helping to keep one of the region's most deeply rooted traditions alive. For those visiting the L'Aquila area during the holidays, traveling the nativity trail of Tornimparte means discovering an authentic village where faith, folk art, and hospitality intertwine.
The twentieth edition of the La Strada dei Presepi Competition in Tornimparte, organized by the Pro Loco, concluded on January 6, 2026, with the awards ceremony in the monumental church of San Panfilo. The event reached its participation record with 87 total works, of which 47 were in the national and international photography section.
The awards ceremony was attended by Mayor Giammario Fiori, parish priest Father Cristoforo Simula, and regional councilor Roberto Santangelo. The prestigious 13th Francesco Scardaci Trophy was awarded to the Parish of Santo Stefano in Pizzoli. The event was part of the "Cultural Roots" project promoted by Unpli and Anci, with the patronage of the Ministry of Culture for the protection of Italian intangible heritage.
Competition sections: national/international photography, nativity scenes outside the territory, nativity scenes within the Municipality of Tornimparte, and the "Most Beautiful Christmas Tree" competition (for children and adults).
Tornimparte is located in the province of L'Aquila, easily accessible from the A24/A25 motorway (L'Aquila Ovest exit) and the state road 17. By car, it is just a few kilometers from the regional capital.
The competition takes place throughout the Christmas period, with jury visits between late December and early January. The awards ceremony is traditionally held on January 6th in the church of San Panfilo.
