About La Strada dei Presepi

Every year during the Christmas season, the village of Tornimparte in the province of L'Aquila transforms into a nativity scene trail thanks to the La Strada dei Presepi competition, organized by the local Pro Loco. Homes, churches, schools, and village streets host Nativity representations created by citizens, parishes, and schools. The competition, which also includes a national and international photography section, culminates in an awards ceremony and the presentation of the Francesco Scardaci Trophy in the evocative church of San Panfilo.

La Strada dei Presepi: the Christmas tradition of Tornimparte

In the heart of the Abruzzo Apennines, the municipality of Tornimparte, in the province of L'Aquila, celebrates one of its most cherished events every winter: the La Strada dei Presepi Competition. Organized by the Pro Loco of Tornimparte, the event spans the entire Christmas period, turning the municipal area into a widespread trail of Nativity scenes set up in homes, churches, schools, and along the streets of the local hamlets.

A multi-section competition

The event is structured into several competitive sections designed to involve the entire community and beyond. Alongside categories reserved for citizens and parishes of Tornimparte and the wider L'Aquila area, there is a dedicated space for local and surrounding schools. The photography section also holds great importance, open to national and international participants, which over the years has attracted works from various Italian regions and even abroad.

Juries visit the competing nativity scenes between late December and early January, evaluating attention to detail, originality, and the ability to convey the message of the nativity tradition. The top finishers in each section receive an award, while special recognition is given to schools and the most loyal participants who have been involved since the very first editions.

The Francesco Scardaci Trophy

The symbolic heart of the competition is the Francesco Scardaci Trophy, awarded to the best representation across all categories. The trophy, which has reached numerous editions over time, is dedicated to the memory of a figure closely linked to the community and represents the highest honor of the event. The presentation takes place during the awards ceremony, hosted in the monumental church of San Panfilo, a splendid 13th-century building famous for its 15th-century frescoes by Saturnino Gatti.

An event of great cultural and religious value

La Strada dei Presepi is more than just a competition: it is a moment of sharing that strengthens the sense of community and enhances the cultural and religious heritage of Abruzzo. Included among the initiatives promoted by the Unpli for the preservation of the cultural roots of Italian villages, the event attracts visitors and nativity enthusiasts every year, helping to keep one of the region's most deeply rooted traditions alive. For those visiting the L'Aquila area during the holidays, traveling the nativity trail of Tornimparte means discovering an authentic village where faith, folk art, and hospitality intertwine.

Twentieth edition: a historic milestone
