The "La Solagna" Unpublished Poetry Literary Competition is an annual event held in early June that brings the power of poetry to the stone houses of Succiano, a tiny and charming village in the municipality of Acciano, in the province of L'Aquila, in the heart of the Abruzzo Subequana Valley. The name of the prize comes from a local term: "solagna" refers to a spot well-exposed to the sun—a warm, bright slope—which is the perfect image for an initiative created to shed light on the memory and beauty of words.
The competition is dedicated to Marianna Baronio, a young woman from L'Aquila who passed away prematurely at just twenty-six, passionate about writing and science. A classical high school graduate with a degree in Biotechnology from the University of L'Aquila, Marianna cultivated poetry and fiction with dedication, leaving behind several published works. The Pro Loco of Succiano chose to honor her memory by establishing this prize and naming the village's multipurpose hall after her, where the awards ceremony takes place each year.
The prize is reserved for unpublished poetry and includes several sections:
Works selected by the jury are awarded during the ceremony and, in some editions, collected in a dedicated publication, showcasing the vitality of a small village that knows how to turn culture into a community asset.
Organized by the Pro Loco of Succiano with the patronage of the Municipality of Acciano and the Sirente-Velino Regional Natural Park, "La Solagna" is much more than a literary competition: it is an opportunity to rediscover an authentic corner of inland Abruzzo, amidst mountains, villages, and traditions. The awards day brings the small village to life, attracting poets, enthusiasts, and visitors in an intimate and engaging atmosphere that pays tribute to the gentle power of poetry.
The 2026 edition of the "La Solagna" Literary Competition continues the journey started in 2023 by the Pro Loco of Succiano, in the municipality of Acciano (AQ). This event for unpublished poetry, in both Italian and dialect, remains a key cultural initiative in the Subequana Valley, within the Sirente-Velino Regional Natural Park. Full program details and the names of the 2026 winners will be published by the organizers and the Municipality of Acciano.
Succiano is a village in the municipality of Acciano (AQ), in the Subequana Valley. By car, it can be reached from the A25 motorway (Cocullo or Bussi/Popoli exit), continuing along the SS 261 towards the Aterno Valley. The nearest train station is in L'Aquila.
Participation in the competition is via submission of works according to the call for entries published annually by the Pro Loco of Succiano and on literary competition portals. The awards ceremony is held in the Marianna Baronio Multipurpose Hall and is open to the public.
