A re-enactment of traditional fishing in Vasto Marina
La Sciabica is a re-enactment of an ancient fishing art that defined the lives of generations of fishermen along the Adriatic coast, though it is no longer practiced today. Every summer, on the beach of Vasto Marina, in the municipality of Vasto (Province of Chieti, Abruzzo), this collective act is brought back to life before the curious eyes of beachgoers, tourists, and residents, restoring a fragment of the city's maritime identity.
The term 'sciabica' refers to the large seine net operated from the shore. During the event, a rowing boat travels in a wide semi-circle parallel to the coast, casting the long net into the sea. Once the two ends are brought back to land, two teams of fishermen begin the patient and coordinated task of retrieving it, pulling the net by hand until the catch is brought ashore. It is a slow, communal operation that captures the toil and solidarity of traditional seafaring life.
The sea re-enactment is always accompanied by an educational segment dedicated to local culinary traditions, featuring the preparation of brodetto di pesce alla vastese, one of the iconic dishes of Abruzzo's maritime cuisine. This Adriatic fish soup, prepared according to the authentic Vasto recipe, provides the perfect conclusion to the morning, blending the memory of the sea with the pleasures of the table.
The event is organized by the Vasto section of the National Association of Italian Sailors (ANMI), with the support of the Municipality of Vasto and the collaboration of the Maritime District Office (Coast Guard). The event usually takes place on a Sunday in July, in the central area of Vasto Marina beach, near the Nautical Club. Admission is free.
Overlooking the Adriatic at the southern tip of Abruzzo, Vasto is one of the most beloved destinations on the Costa dei Trabocchi, known for its Blue Flag beaches, a historic center rich in heritage, and a strong fishing tradition. La Sciabica is part of a vibrant calendar of summer events that celebrate the deep bond between the city and its sea.
The twentieth edition of La Sciabica is scheduled for Sunday, July 26, 2026, at 9:00 AM, on the beach of Vasto Marina, near the Nautical Club. This is a significant milestone for the event organized by the Vasto Sailors' Association, which once again presents the re-enactment of the ancient fishing technique where the large net is pulled ashore by fishermen, followed by an educational session on preparing the brodetto di pesce alla vastese.
