The blackout event in the village of Scanno, lit only by torches, lanterns, and candles
La Notte Nera is one of the most distinctive events of the Abruzzo summer, taking place in the historic center of Scanno, an enchanting village in the Province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo, nestled in the mountains of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park and known for its heart-shaped lake. For one evening, the entire town renounces electric lighting: the streets, alleys, and squares of the village are illuminated only by torches, lanterns, and candles, creating a unique, timeless atmosphere.
As evening falls, Scanno transforms into a vast, open-air theater. Along the streets of the historic center, street artists from all over Italy perform: acrobats, jugglers, fire-breathers, dancers, and visual performers bring every corner of the village to life with roving shows. The flames of the torches, the play of light, and the fire performances make La Notte Nera an immersive and engaging experience suitable for all ages.
Alongside the street performances, the event features live concerts with bands ranging from rock to folk and pop, followed by DJ sets that keep the squares buzzing until late at night. There is no shortage of food and wine stalls, refreshment points, and local venues that welcome residents and visitors between performances.
Held during the Ferragosto weekend, La Notte Nera has become a staple of the Scanno summer, drawing thousands of people every year. The event, organized with the involvement of the Municipality of Scanno and local entities, highlights the architectural heritage of the villageโone of the most beautiful in Italyโby offering an original and fascinating perspective: that of darkness as a spectacle, capable of rediscovering the magic of streets illuminated only by living flame.
La Notte Nera 2026 will take place on Saturday, August 22, 2026, in the historic center of Scanno, with the theme "The Dreams of the Sagittario", a nod to the nearby Gole del Sagittario that define the territory. The village will once again turn off its lights to relive the magic of the blackout event, illuminated solely by torches, lanterns, and candles. Street performances, live concerts, and DJ sets are expected to bring the squares to life until late at night. The full program, including the artist lineup and schedule, will be published by the organizers closer to the event.
Scanno can be reached by car via the A25 motorway (exit Cocullo or Pratola Peligna-Sulmona), continuing along the SS479 through the Gole del Sagittario. The nearest train station is in Sulmona, which is connected to Scanno by local bus lines.
The event takes place during the Ferragosto weekend, in the evening and at night, from late afternoon until dawn.
Access to the event is free. Given the high turnout, it is advisable to arrive early and park in the areas outside the historic center.
The program and details are updated on the Visit Scanno tourist portal and the village's official social media channels.
