The trail race that runs through the history of Alba Fucens
L'Alba dei Marsi is one of the most iconic mountain running events in Abruzzo. Every year, in the first half of June, the race kicks off from Antrosano, a village in the municipality of Avezzano (L'Aquila), drawing hundreds of athletes to the trails surrounding the Alba Fucens archaeological site. The event is organized by the A.S.D. USA Sporting Club Avezzano and is part of the Corri Marsica UISP circuit, with the patronage of the Municipality of Avezzano, which has officially recognized it as an event of institutional significance.
The race offers two competitive tracks on predominantly dirt paths:
The routes climb the San Pietro, Pettorino, and San Nicola hills, crossing sites of extraordinary historical value: the Roman amphitheater, the ancient roads of the Latin colony, the ruins of the medieval village of Albe, and the Romanesque church of San Pietro. All of this is set within the stunning Sirente-Velino Regional Natural Park, with views overlooking the Fucino basin.
Founded in 303 BC as a Latin colony, Alba Fucens was a vital Roman stronghold for centuries. Running through its ruins means traversing over two millennia of historyโhence the organizers' chosen subtitle: "the trail that runs through history." The event is more than just a sporting competition; it is a way to promote the archaeological and landscape heritage of the Marsica region and the entire Abruzzo territory.
Alongside the competitive races, L'Alba dei Marsi offers activities for everyone: the "Alba dei Marsi Giovani" youth races for children, and Archeotrekking, a non-competitive walk that allows participants to discover the archaeological site at a slower pace with guided insights. The event is supported by local associations, including Pro Loco Alba Fucens, Pro Loco Forme, and various local cultural groups.
With each edition, the race has seen a steady increase in participants, attracting hundreds of runners from all over Abruzzo and neighboring regions. The warm hospitality, well-stocked aid stations, and meticulous organization have cemented L'Alba dei Marsi as a staple in the Marsican running calendar.
The seventh edition of L'Alba dei Marsi was held on Sunday, June 7, 2026, in Antrosano, a village of Avezzano, with a real boom in registrations. On the two competitive tracks, the long trail of 21 km (850 m D+) recorded over 450 participants, while the short trail of 12 km (420 m D+) awarded the FIDAL Regional Mountain Running Champion title.
In the long trail, Domenico Pace (ASD Ecoroscetta) took the win, crossing the finish line in about 1 hour and 44 minutes with a lead of over six minutes, while Veronica Del Grosso (USA Sporting Club Avezzano) triumphed in the women's category. Victories on the 12 km course went to Domenico Campitelli and Sonia Quattrocchi. The edition, favored by beautiful weather, confirmed the growth of the event and its institutional importance for the Municipality of Avezzano.
Antrosano is a village in Avezzano (AQ), accessible by car via the A25 motorway (Avezzano exit) by following signs for Alba Fucens. The nearest train station is in Avezzano.
Registration is available online through dedicated timing platforms (timingrun.it, endu.net). The meeting point and start line are located in Antrosano on the morning of the race.
As this is a trail race with elevation gain, trail running shoes and appropriate athletic gear are recommended. While June generally offers favorable weather, conditions can vary at higher altitudes.
