The Karst carnival of Opicina, a cross-border tradition of the Trieste Karst
The Kraški Pust — "Karst carnival" in Slovene — is the grand carnival celebration of Opicina, the village on the Karst plateau that is part of the Municipality of Trieste. It is one of the most deeply rooted and beloved events in the Karst region, profoundly linked to the culture of the local Slovene community and the cross-border tradition that unites the Italian and Slovene Karst.
The heart of the festival is the spectacular parade of allegorical floats and masked groups that winds through the streets of Opicina. Over a thousand participants animate the procession with costumes, music, satire, and colour, in a riot of fantasy and irony that involves the entire community. The floats, carefully built in the preceding months, often offer a sharp look at current events and local life.
Now in its 57th edition in 2026, the Kraški Pust has its roots in the folk culture of the Karst, where carnival has always been a moment of collective celebration and propitiatory rite. The event, organised with the support of the Municipality of Trieste, is a symbol of the bilingual and multicultural soul of the Julian city, where Italian and Slovene traditions coexist and dialogue.
Attending the Kraški Pust means discovering the most authentic and popular face of the Trieste Karst, far from the usual tourist circuits. A day of celebration, music, and masks that tells the identity of a community proud of its roots and its two languages.
The 57th edition of Kraški Pust, the Karst carnival of Opicina, took place on Saturday, February 21, 2026, postponed from February 14 due to bad weather. From 2:00 PM, over a thousand participants enlivened the village streets with the traditional parade of allegorical floats and masked groups, amidst music, satire, and colour. To ensure the safe conduct of the procession, the Municipality of Trieste implemented traffic diversions along Opicina's main roads.
The 2026 edition was originally scheduled for February 14 and was postponed to February 21 due to bad weather.
How to get there: Opicina can be reached from the centre of Trieste by public urban transport; during the parade, traffic diversions are planned along the main streets of the village.
Admission: free event; the parade takes place in the afternoon.
