Kites take flight over the Campo di Marte to welcome spring in Sabaudia
In the heart of the Agro Pontino, nestled between coastal dunes and the silhouette of the Circeo promontory, the Kite and Spring Festival has rapidly become one of the most cherished events in the Sabaudia calendar, in the province of Latina. For a full weekend in April, the rationalist city founded in 1934 celebrates the arrival of the warmer season with a program designed especially for families: kites dancing in the wind, creative workshops, markets, and street entertainment.
The most enchanting moments of the event take place at the Campo di Marte, the vast lawn that transforms into an open-air flight arena for the occasion. Here, children participate in kite-making workshops, using paper, string, and imagination to craft their own models, while expert kite flyers perform breathtaking stunts that keep everyone looking skyward. In the 2026 edition, around two hundred children signed up for the activities, with parents relaxing on the grass to enjoy the spectacle of the colorful sky.
The festivities continue in the city center, where Piazza del Comune comes alive with an antique and craft market, performances by street artists, miniature trains for the little ones, and attractions for the whole family. In various editions, the square has also hosted local nursery stands, street food vendors, and performances by local dance schools and sports clubs, turning the city's main square into a vibrant, open-air stage.
The event was launched in 2024 by the Productive Activities Department of the Municipality of Sabaudia, with the explicit goal of fostering social connection and bringing the city's public spaces to life. The 2025 edition marked the grand finale of the celebrations for the 90th anniversary of Sabaudia's founding, while the third edition in April 2026 confirmed its success with hundreds of attendees gathering between Campo di Marte and Piazza del Comune. The event is made possible through the collaboration of local organizations such as the Ninfea cooperative, the Pro Loco of Sabaudia, and the Merchants' Association.
Attending the festival is also the perfect excuse to discover Sabaudia, a jewel of rationalist architecture immersed in the Circeo National Park. The Lazio region preserves here one of the most unique landscapes on the Tyrrhenian coast: the dune cordons, the coastal lake of Paola, and the Circeo promontory provide a natural backdrop for an event that perfectly blends play, tradition, and outdoor life.
The third edition of the festival, promoted by the Productive Activities Department of the Municipality of Sabaudia with the collaboration of the Ninfea cooperative, the Pro Loco, and the Merchants' Association, saw a great turnout. On Saturday morning and afternoon, the Campo di Marte hosted kite-making workshops and flight demonstrations by experts, while on Sunday, Piazza del Comune came alive all day with markets, street performers, and family attractions. Mayor Alberto Mosca and delegate Giovanni Pietro Fogli highlighted the event's value as an occasion for community gathering.
By car: Sabaudia is accessible via the SS148 Pontina (Sabaudia exit), approximately 90 km from Rome and 25 km from Latina. Parking is available near the town center and the Campo di Marte.
By train + bus: Take the train to Priverno-Fossanova station on the Rome-Naples line, then catch a COTRAL bus to Sabaudia; COTRAL connections are also available from Latina and Rome (Laurentina).
All festival activities—kite-making workshops, flight demonstrations, markets, and performances—are free of charge.
Activities at the Campo di Marte take place on Saturday morning and afternoon: bring a blanket to sit on the grass. On Sunday, the festival moves to Piazza del Comune for the entire day.
