The traditional festival of Chienes on the Sacred Heart of Jesus weekend in the Puster Valley
The Kiener Kirchtag und Herz Jesu Fest, affectionately known by locals as Kiena Kirschta, is one of the most cherished popular festivals in the municipality of Chienes/Kiens, located in the Puster Valley (South Tyrol). Held during the Sacred Heart of Jesus weekend (Herz-Jesu-Wochenende)—a tradition deeply rooted in South Tyrolean culture—the event brings the community together through faith, music, and conviviality.
The event is hosted by the Musikkapelle Kiens, the local brass band, for whom this is the highlight of the year. The festival takes place at the Vereinshaus (Association House) in Chienes, featuring a covered, festive area that ensures the event goes ahead regardless of the weather.
The religious core of the Kirchtag is the solemn Sunday mass, celebrated with the renewal of the Sacred Heart vow, followed by the traditional Herz Jesu procession through the village streets. Once the devotional part concludes, the day continues with guest brass band concerts, dancing, and performances by Schuhplattler groups—the iconic Tyrolean folk dancers.
True to its origins as a festival organized by a Musikkapelle, the event offers a rich program of brass music (Blasmusik): from the Saturday evening concert to the Sunday morning Frühschoppen, and afternoon performances featuring ensembles from across the Puster Valley and South Tyrol.
The culinary experience is a must, with specialties prepared by local women: Tirtlan (savory stuffed fritters), Strauben (spiral-shaped fried pastries), Kirschtakropfn, Weißwürste served at the Frühschoppen, as well as grilled chicken and sausages. Everything is accompanied by coffee, sweets, and beer in a festive atmosphere that delights all ages. The event concludes on Sunday evening with the traditional raffle of the Kirschtamichlbam, the festival tree.
For its 25th anniversary, the Kiena Kirschta offered a rich weekend of festivities. On Saturday, June 13, the evening began at 6:30 PM with a concert by the Musikkapelle Peter Sigmair from Valdaora, followed from 9:00 PM by music and dancing with the group Nia Ginua and a performance by the Garner Schuaplattler. On Sunday, June 14, after the 8:30 AM solemn mass with the renewal of the vow and the Sacred Heart procession, the party continued with the 10:45 AM Frühschoppen accompanied by Taschtn Brass, afternoon concerts by the Knappenkapelle Prettau, the Musikkapelle Terenten, and the Südtiroler Hoderlumpm, and finally, at 8:00 PM, the Kirschtamichlbam raffle. There was no shortage of local culinary specialties and activities for children.
Chienes/Kiens is located in the Puster Valley along the SS49 state road. By car, it can be reached from the Bressanone exit on the A22 Brenner motorway, heading east. By train, the reference stop is the Chienes station on the Puster Valley line (Fortezza–San Candido).
The festival takes place at the Vereinshaus (Association House) of Chienes, in a covered festive area.
