In the heart of the Pescara Valley, the village of Castiglione a Casauria (Pescara province, Abruzzo) preserves one of the most evocative traditions of the Abruzzo summer every year. Ju San Giuanne is a traveling historical re-enactment dedicated to St. John's Night, June 24th, which has always been considered by popular culture to be the most magical night of the year. The performance comes to life at the end of June, turning the town's historic center into a true open-air theater.

A journey into Abruzzo folklore

Starting from a real historical event that took place in the village in the late 19th century, the audience is guided along the village alleys to rediscover the folk tales, superstitions, omens, and mysteries that have accompanied the cult of St. John in Abruzzo for centuries. Ancient rites, beliefs, and traditions intertwine between the sacred and the profane, leading to the purifying power of fire, a central element of St. John's Night. It is a journey that unites memory and local identity, bringing forgotten customs and habits back to life.

Who brings the show to the stage

The event is conceived and curated by the Associazione Interpromium APS of Castiglione a Casauria. The actors are young members of the youth theater workshop, accompanied by the evocative voices of the Coro Corvara InCanto, which provides live musical accompaniment throughout the route. The re-enactment is sponsored by the Municipality of Castiglione a Casauria and is part of the village's broader summer program, which weaves together culture, literature, music, folk traditions, and the territory's food and wine excellence.

The final toast

At the end of the show, the audience is invited to a convivial moment: a final toast offered by Tenuta Secolo IX, a local winery, allowing participants to share the evening's emotions and meet the artists. Admission is public and free, subject to availability.

The evening is also an opportunity to visit Castiglione a Casauria, a village known for the nearby and monumental Abbey of San Clemente a Casauria, one of the masterpieces of Abruzzo's Romanesque-Gothic architecture.
