Jisce Sole — Summer Solstice Celebration

A festival dedicated to the sun and the summer solstice

Jisce Sole is the event that brings the ancient village of Mutignano to life every late June. This evocative hamlet of the municipality of Pineto, in the province of Teramo, lies in the heart of the Adriatic Abruzzo. The name, in the local dialect, refers to the act of making the sun rise: the festival celebrates the summer solstice and the magical intensity that popular tradition attributes to St. John's Eve, when the boundary between the natural world and the sacred becomes blurred.

Mutignano, the village overlooking the sea and the badlands

Perched on a hill overlooking the Adriatic and the characteristic landscape of the badlands, Mutignano is the original settlement from which Pineto later grew. Its alleys and small squares, now decorated with murals depicting scenes of daily life, become the natural stage for a festival that weaves together peasant memory, propitiatory rituals, and conviviality. The nerve center is Piazza San Silvestro, the heart of the evenings.

Solstice rituals

The Jisce Sole program revolves around ancient gestures linked to the passing of the year and the regenerative power of the sun:

• St. John's Waters: the gathering of wild herbs and spontaneous flowers to prepare the scented water which, according to tradition, protects and purifies.
• Cummare e cumbare a fiure: the ritual used to forge bonds of godparenthood by exchanging bunches and garlands of flowers.
• The night walk with songs and dances to the pine forests, awaiting dawn to greet the return of the sun.

Music, dance, and the flavors of Abruzzo

The evenings are accompanied by folk music and dance groups, dance workshops open to everyone, traditional stornelli songs, and the accordion. There is no shortage of craft markets, local products, and food stalls, where you can taste the specialties of Abruzzese cuisine in a festive atmosphere that lasts until late at night.

A tradition reborn every year

Organized by the Mutignano Eventi Cultural Association, Jisce Sole has become a highly anticipated event in the Pineto summer calendar, capable of attracting visitors from neighboring towns and rediscovering an intangible heritage of rituals, songs, and beliefs that belong to the identity of the Teramo territory. An opportunity to experience the village of Mutignano during one of its most evocative nights.
