The Abruzzo stage of the national championship for historical crossbow and slingshot shooting in Floriano di Campli
The Italian Crossbow and Slingshot Championship is a traditional sporting event that stops annually in Floriano di Campli, a village in the municipality of Campli, in the province of Teramo, nestled in the heart of the Teramo province in Abruzzo. The competition is part of the official calendar of FIGeST (Italian Federation of Traditional Games and Sports), the body recognized by CONI that coordinates the disciplines of historical handheld crossbow and slingshot shooting in Italy.
The handheld crossbow is a historical weapon used in the Middle Ages for hunting and warfare: today, it lives on as a sporting discipline that requires great precision, concentration, and training. Alongside it, slingshot shooting is a traditional sport that is constantly growing internationally, divided into two main categories: traditional slingshot and precision slingshot with sights. In Campli, these two disciplines meet in a single event, with competitions awarding category titles as part of the national championship.
The heart of the event is the ASD La Fionda Floriano, a sports association based in Campli and chaired by the federal technical manager Giorgio Pompa. The club is now a national reference point for slingshot shooting, a protagonist in Italian championships, and particularly committed to the dimension of inclusion: for years, it has promoted the participation of visually impaired athletes who compete alongside sighted participants, making this sport a recognized example of integration.
The Campli stage is part of the rich Campli Summer calendar, which transforms the Teramo village into a widespread stage for events ranging from music and food festivals to culture and popular traditions from June to September. The crossbow and slingshot championship brings the element of traditional sport to this schedule, attracting teams and enthusiasts from all over Italy to Floriano.
Visiting Campli means discovering one of the most characteristic villages in the Teramo area, famous for its Scala Santa, its medieval historic center, and the gastronomic tradition of porchetta and timballo. The event thus combines a passion for an ancient sport with the promotion of a territory rich in history, art, and typical Abruzzo flavors.
The 2026 edition of the Italian Crossbow and Slingshot Championship took place in Floriano di Campli on June 13 and 14, 2026, as a stage of the national FIGeST circuit. The event, organized by ASD La Fionda Floriano under president and federal technical manager Giorgio Pompa, brought together teams and shooters from various Italian regions for historical handheld crossbow and slingshot competitions, both traditional and precision.
As per the tradition of the Campli-based club, the two-day event reaffirmed the value of inclusion, with the participation of visually impaired athletes alongside sighted ones. The event was included in the Campli Summer 2026 calendar, among the sports events of national interest hosted by the Teramo village.
The competitions are held in Floriano, a village of Campli (TE), at the ASD La Fionda Floriano shooting range along the Via Strada Provinciale Floriano.
