Every summer, the Beach Arena of San Benedetto del Tronto, on the seafront of the Riviera delle Palme, transforms into a large sports village to host a stage of the Italian Beach Rugby Trophy. It is the seaside version of the oval ball: reduced teams, sand pitch, fast rhythms, and a festive atmosphere that involves players and spectators. The event takes place in the Municipality of San Benedetto del Tronto, in the province of Ascoli Piceno, in the Marche region, and represents one of the most followed summer sporting events on the Piceno coast.

A travelling national circuit

The San Benedetto stage is part of a large national circuit promoted by the Italian Rugby Federation (FIR), comprising numerous stages distributed along the Italian coasts from May to July, from north to south of the peninsula. The Trophy involves dozens of men's and women's teams and concludes with a National Final that awards the Italian titles in each category. San Benedetto del Tronto plays a special role in this journey: in addition to the summer stage, the city also hosts the circuit's grand final, confirming the strong link between the Riviera delle Palme and the beach rugby movement.

How beach rugby is played

Beach rugby is a fast-paced discipline suitable for everyone, designed for the beach. It is played with reduced teams on a small sand pitch, with short and intense matches. The absence of violent tackles, softened by the soft ground, makes it a spectacular and inclusive sport, capable of combining competition and fun. Senior teams alternate on the field, and in many stages, youth and mini-rugby tournaments are held to introduce children and young people to the oval ball.
