A festival of civic theatre, tradition, and music in Ustica
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Isola di Culture is a festival held between late August and early September that brings the Municipal Theatre of Ustica to life. Located in the Municipality of Ustica, a small volcanic island off the coast of Palermo, Sicily, the event was established in 2025. It weaves together civic theatre, folk tradition, and music into a short but intense programme designed to engage both residents and visitors as the island's summer season draws to a close.
The heart of the festival lies in theatrical storytelling that explores Sicily's recent history: performances that evoke stories of the mafia, figures of civic commitment, and voices of non-violent resistance. Since its first edition, the festival has showcased productions that focus on the power of words, personal testimony, and collective reflection, fostering a constant dialogue between art and citizenship.
Alongside theatre, Isola di Culture celebrates Sicilian song and contemporary sound experimentation. Through musical recitals, tributes to tradition, and original projects, the festival offers a journey that spans from the island's folk roots to the most current research, highlighting the richness of a vibrant musical heritage.
The event is organised by the Municipality of Ustica and CoopCulture, in collaboration with the Collettivo Genรฌa and the Kangaroo association, with the support of the Sicilian Regional Department of Tourism. Admission is free, reflecting the organisers' desire to make high-quality cultural offerings accessible to everyone within a unique natural and scenic setting.
Accessible by ferry or hydrofoil from Palermo, Ustica is renowned for its crystal-clear waters and for being home to Italy's first Marine Protected Area. Attending the festival means combining the discovery of the island with evening performances, creating an experience that links culture, the sea, and Mediterranean identity.
The 2026 edition of Isola di Culture has not yet been officially confirmed. The first edition took place in late summer 2025 at the Municipal Theatre of Ustica, in Sicily, and any potential second edition would maintain the format of civic theatre, folk roots, and music with free admission. For updated dates and programmes, please consult the channels of the Municipality of Ustica and CoopCulture.
Ustica can be reached from Palermo via maritime connections (ferries and hydrofoils) departing from the city's port. Once on the island, distances are short, and the Municipal Theatre is easily accessible on foot from the town centre.
Admission to the performances is free. It is recommended to arrive early, given the intimate size of the theatre.
The festival traditionally takes place between late August and early September. We recommend checking the updated programme with the Municipality of Ustica.
