The Norman village of Altavilla Silentina comes alive with flavors, music, and medieval performances
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In Altavilla Silentina, a town in the province of Salerno, Campania, the end of August brings an event that has quickly captured the heart of the historic center: Intra Moenia - Summer Flavors. The name says it all, as "within the walls" is exactly where the journey of flavors, music, and performances unfolds: the fortified perimeter of this Norman village. For three evenings, alleys, small squares, and medieval gateways become the natural stage for a festival built by local community associations.
Intra Moenia is not entirely new to Altavilla Silentina. The event has existed for over a decade in its winter version, held between December 27th and 29th, which grew from the historic Wild Boar Festival to reach its thirteenth edition. In 2025, the organizers decided to double the fun, proposing an unprecedented summer edition for the first time: thus, Summer Flavors was born, debuting from August 22nd to 24th, 2025.
The heart of the event is the food and wine trail winding through the historic center. Along the village streets, you will find:
The 2025 edition opened with a highly symbolic gesture: the opening of the Porta di Suso, one of the historic access points to the city walls, followed by a medieval pageant that descended from the Castle to Piazza Umberto I.
While the village hosts the flavors, the main square hosts the music. The Extra Moenia Festival, literally "outside the walls," brings evening concerts to Piazza Umberto I with a lineup focusing on reggae, urban, and contemporary music. The first summer edition featured performances by Barracca Republic, Tartaglianeuro, and Morfuco & Tonico 70, all well-known names in the Campania music scene.
Intra Moenia - Summer Flavors is more than just a local fair. The program of the first edition opened with the conference "The future doesn't just live in the city. The destiny of rural areas," featuring representatives from the provincial and regional political landscape. The message championed by the organizers is clear: it is still possible to live, work, and stay in small villages. This is a theme that resonates deeply in Campania and across much of the Italian interior.
The setting alone is worth the trip. Altavilla Silentina sits at an altitude of 275 meters on a hill in the province of Salerno, nestled between the Sele and Alento rivers—hence the addition of "Silentina" to its name in 1862. Its medieval origins are tied to the Norman family of Altavilla (Hauteville): around 1080, Robert Guiscard commissioned the castle that still dominates the town. Destroyed in 1246 by the troops of Frederick II, the village was rebuilt with a quadrangular layout and a new gate, the Portanova. Walking through these walls during Intra Moenia means traversing nearly a thousand years of history.
The event is promoted by the associations Altavilla Viva, Libera Caccia - Sezione Altavilla Silentina, and the Youth Forum, with the patronage of the Municipality of Altavilla Silentina and the Province of Salerno. It is a festival largely built by the town's young people: voluntary organization and community involvement are the true hallmarks of the event.
The 2025 edition, the first summer installment, was held from Friday, August 22nd, to Sunday, August 24th. There are currently no official dates announced for 2026: those wishing to attend should follow the social media channels of the organizing associations and official municipal communications in the weeks leading up to the end of August.

By plane: Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi Airport (Pontecagnano) and Naples-Capodichino Airport.
