About Intra Moenia Summer

At the end of August, the medieval village of Altavilla Silentina, in the heart of the Salerno province, opens its ancient gates for Intra Moenia - Summer Flavors. Launched in 2025 as a summer spin-off of the historic winter event, the festival combines a food and wine trail through the historic center with the Extra Moenia Festival, a music series held in Piazza Umberto I. Expect three evenings of local delicacies, medieval shows, falconry, street performers, exhibitions, and guided tours, all organized by local associations.

Intra Moenia - Summer Flavors: Celebrating the medieval village of Altavilla Silentina

In Altavilla Silentina, a town in the province of Salerno, Campania, the end of August brings an event that has quickly captured the heart of the historic center: Intra Moenia - Summer Flavors. The name says it all, as "within the walls" is exactly where the journey of flavors, music, and performances unfolds: the fortified perimeter of this Norman village. For three evenings, alleys, small squares, and medieval gateways become the natural stage for a festival built by local community associations.

An idea born from the winter tradition

Intra Moenia is not entirely new to Altavilla Silentina. The event has existed for over a decade in its winter version, held between December 27th and 29th, which grew from the historic Wild Boar Festival to reach its thirteenth edition. In 2025, the organizers decided to double the fun, proposing an unprecedented summer edition for the first time: thus, Summer Flavors was born, debuting from August 22nd to 24th, 2025.

A food and wine trail within the ancient walls

The heart of the event is the food and wine trail winding through the historic center. Along the village streets, you will find:

  • Stands featuring local products from the Salerno area and the Piana del Sele;
  • Medieval performances and costumed characters;
  • Falconry displays, among the most photographed attractions;
  • Street artists animating the alleys and squares;
  • Exhibitions and guided tours of the town's iconic landmarks.

The 2025 edition opened with a highly symbolic gesture: the opening of the Porta di Suso, one of the historic access points to the city walls, followed by a medieval pageant that descended from the Castle to Piazza Umberto I.

Extra Moenia Festival: Music in Piazza Umberto I

While the village hosts the flavors, the main square hosts the music. The Extra Moenia Festival, literally "outside the walls," brings evening concerts to Piazza Umberto I with a lineup focusing on reggae, urban, and contemporary music. The first summer edition featured performances by Barracca Republic, Tartaglianeuro, and Morfuco & Tonico 70, all well-known names in the Campania music scene.

A festival that speaks for rural areas

Intra Moenia - Summer Flavors is more than just a local fair. The program of the first edition opened with the conference "The future doesn't just live in the city. The destiny of rural areas," featuring representatives from the provincial and regional political landscape. The message championed by the organizers is clear: it is still possible to live, work, and stay in small villages. This is a theme that resonates deeply in Campania and across much of the Italian interior.

Altavilla Silentina: A Norman village between the Sele and Alento rivers

The setting alone is worth the trip. Altavilla Silentina sits at an altitude of 275 meters on a hill in the province of Salerno, nestled between the Sele and Alento rivers—hence the addition of "Silentina" to its name in 1862. Its medieval origins are tied to the Norman family of Altavilla (Hauteville): around 1080, Robert Guiscard commissioned the castle that still dominates the town. Destroyed in 1246 by the troops of Frederick II, the village was rebuilt with a quadrangular layout and a new gate, the Portanova. Walking through these walls during Intra Moenia means traversing nearly a thousand years of history.

Organizers

The event is promoted by the associations Altavilla Viva, Libera Caccia - Sezione Altavilla Silentina, and the Youth Forum, with the patronage of the Municipality of Altavilla Silentina and the Province of Salerno. It is a festival largely built by the town's young people: voluntary organization and community involvement are the true hallmarks of the event.
