The international Argentine tango festival on the Trani seafront
Every summer, Trani, an elegant city in the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani, Puglia, transforms into the Italian capital of Argentine tango. International Trani Tango, organized by the InMovimiento association, is a festival that blends dance, live music, and local exploration, drawing thousands of enthusiasts from Europe, the Americas, and Asia. The historic center overlooking the harbor, with its famous Romanesque Cathedral by the sea, provides a unique backdrop for milongas under the stars.
The beating heart of the event is the free milongas that bring the city's squares to life from morning until dawn: Piazza Duomo, Piazza Gradenigo, Molo Sant'Antuono overlooking the tourist port, the Swabian Castle, Via Zanardelli, and the alleys of the historic Jewish Quarter. Alongside the dance evenings, the program offers concerts, shows, masterclasses, and seminars with some of the most renowned tango masters in the world.
Trani holds a special bond with Astor Piazzolla, the composer who revolutionized tango: his paternal grandparents were from Trani before emigrating to Mar del Plata, Argentina. The festival celebrates these roots with dedicated performances, concerts, and exhibitions, turning the city into a symbolic bridge between Puglia and Buenos Aires.
The festival attracts world-renowned master couples for lessons, seminars, and galas, including historic figures of Argentine tango such as Miguel รngel Zotto and Daiana Guspero. The evenings are accompanied by live orchestras and TJs (tango DJs) who keep participants dancing until late at night, in an atmosphere that weaves technical rigor with popular passion.
Included among the Great Events of the Puglia Region, International Trani Tango is now a fixture on the Pugliese summer calendar, successfully combining tourism promotion, culture, and hospitality. The Municipality of Trani supports the event, which involves local restaurants, hotels, and merchants, and also offers excursions in the surrounding area, from the trulli of Alberobello to the UNESCO-listed Castel del Monte.
From July 5 to 12, 2026, Trani hosts the thirteenth edition of the festival, the longest ever, with a program dedicated to Astor Piazzolla. The event kicks off on July 5 at 9:00 PM in Piazza Gradenigo with the free inaugural show "Piazzolla & Friends". From that moment on, milongas will bring the city's squares to life from morning until dawn.
Key highlights include the dinner-event "Trani meets Buenos Aires" on July 9 with the Argentine orchestra Flirtango, and the "Tango out of town" format with stops in Canosa di Puglia and Polignano a Mare. The masterclasses feature international master couples, including Miguel รngel Zotto and Daiana Guspero, Vanesa Villalba and Facundo Piรฑero, and Lucila Cionci and Joe Corbata. Evenings are accompanied by the Flirtango orchestra and TJs Hurracane, Gaston Gody, Elektra Sol, and Punto y Branca.
Milongas in the squares and inaugural shows are free; seminars, couple lessons, and some evening milongas require payment, with packages available on the official website.
Trani is served by the railway station on the Adriatic Bologna-Lecce line, with regional and high-speed 'Frecce' connections. By car, it can be reached via the A14 motorway (Trani exit). The nearest airports are Bari-Palese and Bari Karol Wojtyลa, approximately 45 minutes away.
Many events, including the milongas in the squares and the opening performances, are free of charge. Seminars, couple lessons, and some evening milongas require payment; all-inclusive packages and tickets are available on the official website.
The dance evenings take place outdoors: we recommend wearing suitable dance shoes and comfortable clothing. It is advisable to book accommodation well in advance for the festival period.
