The grand colored sand carpet in the heart of Ispica
The Insabbiata is one of the most original artistic and cultural events in southeastern Sicily. Every year, in the heart of the historic center of Ispica, in the province of Ragusa, the scenic Piazza Sant'Antonio Abate is transformed into a vast, colorful carpet of sand, meticulously composed grain by grain by the young members of the Insabbiata Cultural Association. This monumental yet ephemeral work of art stretches out before the 16th-century church, inviting visitors to admire it from above like a grand open-air painting.
The core theme of the Insabbiata is its annual tribute: each edition brings to life a homage to a different master of art history. Past editions have celebrated icons such as Picasso, Matisse, and Chagall, whose works are reinterpreted and recreated using the hues of the sand. The result is a bridge between universal art and local identity, drawing visitors, art lovers, and curious onlookers to Ispica from across the region.
Surrounding the main installation is a rich program that brings the historic center to life over several days:
The setting itself is part of the spectacle: Piazza Sant'Antonio Abate, with its Baroque layout, was chosen as a film set for the movie Kaos by the Taviani brothers. The event was born from the desire of the association's youth to enhance and revitalize the heart of Ispica's historic center through artistic projects, restoring a deeply felt identity-building appointment to the Iblean town.
The Insabbiata is a free-admission event designed for audiences of all ages, offering an ideal opportunity to discover Ispica and its Baroque heritage in the Val di Noto region of Sicily.
The 11th edition of the Insabbiata will be held in Ispica (RG) from July 15 to 19, 2026: an exceptional summer date compared to the traditional late May appointment. Piazza Sant'Antonio Abate will once again welcome the monumental colored sand carpet, the heart of the event, around which exhibitions, concerts, street performances, tastings, and artisan markets will take place. The featured artist and the complete daily program will be announced by the Insabbiata Cultural Association closer to the event date.
