Flower carpets along Viale Umberto I for the Corpus Domini solemnity
The Infiorata del Corpus Domini is one of the most heartfelt and anticipated events in Caldarola, a small inland village in the province of Macerata, in the Marche region. On the occasion of the Corpus Domini solemnity, the streets of the town are dressed in color: petals, dried flowers, leaves, and natural materials are patiently arranged to form large floral compositions that transform the pavement into an ephemeral and surprising mosaic.
The most fascinating moment of the event is experienced at night. In the hours between Saturday and Sunday, dozens of volunteers of all ages take turns until the first light of dawn to complete the carpets: some collect and prepare the flowers in the preceding days, some design the sketches, others patiently fill every space with petals. It is a collective effort that involves local families, groups, and associations, making the Infiorata an authentic community celebration before being a spectacle for the eyes.
The tradition originated from the initiative of elementary school children, with the creation of the first two floral carpets on the churchyards of the town's churches. Year after year, the Infiorata grew, involving entire generations of citizens. After the earthquake that struck Central Italy in 2016, the event changed its setting: from the alleys and squares of the historic center, it moved along Viale Umberto I, maintaining its original spirit intact.
The Infiorata of Caldarola is part of the great Italian tradition of Corpus Domini infiorate, ancient events where the path of the Eucharistic procession is adorned with carpets of petals. Each edition is dedicated to a theme, often linked to a religious or spiritual anniversary: the floral compositions thus tell messages of fraternity, hope, and beauty, offering visitors not only a visual spectacle but also a moment of reflection.
The event takes place on the Sunday of Corpus Domini, generally between late May and June. Viewing the carpets is free: they can be admired on Sunday morning, before and during the procession, when the avenue is entirely decorated. An ideal trip to also discover the village of Caldarola, its Pallotta Castle, and the landscape of the Monti Azzurri.
The 35th edition of the Infiorata del Corpus Domini will be held in Caldarola on Sunday, June 7, 2026, along Viale Umberto I. The chosen theme is dedicated to the 800th anniversary of the Transitus of Saint Francis: the floral compositions are inspired by the values of fraternity, humanity, mercy, and hope, in dialogue with the figure of the Saint of Assisi.
As every year, the beating heart of the event is the night between Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7, when dozens of volunteers of all ages take turns until dawn to create the carpets of petals and natural materials. On Sunday morning, the flower-lined avenue hosts the religious celebration and the Eucharistic procession.
The day is preceded by the night-time setup of the floral carpets along Viale Umberto I, carried out by volunteers on the night between Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7, until the first light of dawn.
Edition theme: the 800th anniversary of the Transitus of Saint Francis (fraternity, humanity, mercy, and hope). Detailed times for Mass and procession will be announced by the parish and the organizing committee in the days preceding the event.
Caldarola is located in the Macerata hinterland, along the SS77 of the Val di Chienti. By car: take the Tolentino/Sforzacosta exit from the SS77 and continue inland. The nearest train station is Tolentino, about 20 km away, from where you can continue by bus or car.
The floral carpets are laid out along Viale Umberto I, in the center of Caldarola. It is advisable to arrive on Sunday morning to admire the works before the procession.
The event is free and open to all.
Combine your visit to the Infiorata with the discovery of the village, the Castello Pallotta, and local typical products (ciauscolo, pecorino, Coroncina oil). Nearby is also the Caccamo Lake.
