International Festival of Contemporary Dramaturgy in Rome
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In Altre Parole is the International Festival of Contemporary Dramaturgy held in Rome, in the heart of the Municipio I district, between late autumn and early winter. Primarily hosted at the Teatro Manzoni on Via Monte Zebio in the Prati neighborhood, the event offers Roman audiences a selection of unpublished plays from across the world, presented as national premieres through staged readings and dramatic performances.
Conceived by Pino Tierno and curated alongside Miriam Mesturino, the festival is produced by the Dianact Platea Cultural Association. Since its inception, the event has introduced over 170 texts to Italy as national premieres, many of which have gone on to full-scale productions. Each session goes beyond a simple reading: actors, directors, authors, and translators engage with the audience and industry professionals in a dialogue that also explores the nuances of theatrical translation and new writing.
The hallmark of In Altre Parole is its European and international vocation. Past editions have featured works from Austria, France, Israel, the Netherlands, Quebec, Slovakia, Spain (in both Castilian and Catalan), the Czech Republic, and, of course, Italy. The festival collaborates with the embassies and cultural institutes of the participating countries, such as the Instituto Cervantes and the Romanian Academy, which support the circulation of these works and contemporary authorial voices.
Integrated into the vibrant cultural programming of the Municipality of Rome and the Lazio Region, the festival is a precious appointment for those looking to discover the theatrical writing shaping European stages. The project has also been recognized within the creative support programs promoted by the Capital, confirming its role as a bridge between the Roman scene and international dramaturgy.
For theater enthusiasts and lovers of the written word, In Altre Parole is a unique opportunity to hear, in Italian, texts that capture the present through the eyes of authors from all corners of the world.
The 2026 edition of the international contemporary dramaturgy festival In Altre Parole has not yet been officially announced with specific dates or a program. The event, conceived by Pino Tierno and produced by the Dianact Platea Cultural Association, traditionally maintains an annual schedule between October and December at the Teatro Manzoni in Rome.
The project has been granted two-year funding that covers the 2026 cycle, making a new edition highly likely. As soon as the organization publishes the official calendar and the list of readings, this page will be updated with dates, venues, and the full program.
