The art that lights up the historic center of Putignano
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
ImprovvisArte is the event that, every spring, restores the most authentic vocation of Putignano's historic center (Province of Bari, Puglia): that of being a vast, open-air creative hub. For an entire day, Corso Umberto I and the alleys of the old town are filled with easels, canvases, sculptures, craft stalls, musical notes, and voices. Painters, sculptors, artisans, street performers, singers, musicians, and actors animate every corner, turning the town into a vibrant, widespread gallery.
The underlying idea is simple and generous: to offer artists, both local and visiting, a reliable and ongoing space to express themselves and engage with a curious and increasingly involved public. From the morning, works and performances take shape along the narrow streets of the historic center; as evening falls, the atmosphere shifts, giving way to evening performances of theater, music, and street circus. There is no shortage of conviviality, with tastings of local flavors accompanying visitors between one performance and the next.
The event is conceived and curated by the Trullando cultural and tourism association, a Putignano-based organization active in promoting the territory through art, culture, food and wine, tourism, music, and street performance. Over the years, ImprovvisArte has become a reference point for the local artistic community: the initiative does not charge spectators but welcomes spontaneous support and sincere smiles. The Municipality of Putignano grants the event free patronage and the use of public space, with the support of the Pro Loco and local associations.
It is no coincidence that such an artistic festival was born in Putignano: the town is famous throughout Italy for its Carnival, one of the oldest in Europe, and for a centuries-old tradition linked to papier-mรขchรฉ, masks, and popular entertainment. ImprovvisArte gathers and relaunches this creative identity in a contemporary key, bringing art out of museums and into the daily life of the historic center.
ImprovvisArte is free and open to the public: you can wander freely through the alleys, watch artists at work, stop to listen to music, and taste typical products from Puglia. It is an event designed for all ages, ideal for those who want to discover Putignano in a different light and spend a day immersed in widespread art.
The return of ImprovvisArte in 2026 will renew the spring appointment with widespread art in the historic center of Putignano, featuring painters, sculptors, artisans, street performers, musicians, and actors. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the organizing association, Trullando: the final calendar and the program of performances will be communicated on official channels. As per tradition, admission will be free.
