In Terzigno, a town in the Metropolitan City of Naples overlooking the southern slopes of Mount Vesuvius, the Blessed Virgin Mary Immaculate is more than just a date on the liturgical calendar: she is the patron saint of the town. Her feast day, held on December 8th, is the moment the entire community unites in a single shared ritual. The solemnity of the Immaculate Conception effectively kicks off the Christmas season throughout Campania, but here it holds even greater significance, coinciding with the patronal feast and the centuries-old bond between the inhabitants and the parish church dedicated to her.
The core of the day is the solemn Eucharistic celebration at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Piazza Troiano Caracciolo del Sole, attended by religious and civil authorities. In recent years, the patronal mass has been presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Nola, Monsignor Francesco Marino, in the presence of local clergy and faithful from neighboring parishes.
In the afternoon, the statue of the Immaculate leaves the church and travels in procession through the main streets of the town, accompanied by prayers, Marian hymns, and a long parade of the faithful. It is the most attended moment: balconies are decorated, streets fill up, and the statue moves slowly between two wings of the crowd. In some editions, the procession has included a deeply felt symbolic gesture: the handing over of the town keys to the Virgin by the mayor, a sign of the community entrusting itself to its patron saint.
Alongside the liturgical dimension, the secular side of the festival unfolds, maintaining the classic features of a Southern Italian patronal feast:
Admission to all festival events is free and open to all: it is a public celebration for residents and visitors alike, with no tickets or reservations required.
Terzigno is located within the Vesuvius National Park, in an area famous for its highly fertile volcanic soil, the viticulture of Lacryma Christi wine, and the cultivation of the Piennolo cherry tomato. The patronal feast is part of a fabric of religious and popular traditions that are very much alive throughout the Vesuvius area, where processions and celebrations in honor of patron saints mark the year and represent a shared intangible heritage. Visitors will find an authentic festival here, not staged for tourism, where the devotional dimension remains absolutely central.
Participating in the Immaculate Conception Feast in Terzigno means observing Campanian popular religiosity up close—an experience still intact, made of songs, anticipation, and gestures passed down from generation to generation. It is also an opportunity to discover a town in Campania often overlooked by classic itineraries, located a short distance from Pompeii, Herculaneum, and the Great Cone of Vesuvius, and to start the Christmas season with an experience different from the usual Christmas markets.
In Terzigno, the patronal feast coincides with the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, which occurs every year on December 8th. For the 2026 edition, no detailed program has been published yet: neither the Immaculate Conception Parish nor the municipal administration has released times, the procession route, or side events as of the date this page was written.
Based on previous editions, one can expect the usual structure combining the religious moment—solemn Eucharistic celebration in the parish church and procession with the statue of the Immaculate through the streets of Terzigno—and the secular moment, with illuminations, market stalls, and fireworks. However, none of this is officially confirmed for 2026.

By train: Terzigno is served by the Circumvesuviana (EAV) station of the same name, on the Naples–Ottaviano–Sarno line, with departures from Naples Porta Nolana and Naples Piazza Garibaldi. From the station, the town center and the parish church can be reached on foot in a few minutes.
By car: Take the Torre Annunziata Sud or Angri exit on the A3 Naples–Salerno motorway, then follow provincial roads toward San Giuseppe Vesuviano / Terzigno. On festival days, the center may be partially closed to traffic for the procession: it is advisable to park in the outskirts and continue on foot.
By plane: Naples-Capodichino Airport is approximately 25 km away.
All events (mass, procession, entertainment in the square, fireworks) are free and open to the public.
