A candlelit night in the historic center of Patrica, featuring live music and roving performances.

Illumina - Candles in the Village is the evening event that transforms the historic center of Patrica, a small town in the province of Frosinone, Southern Lazio, every summer. For one night, the entire ancient core abandons electric lighting: over 15,000 candles are lit along the stairways, alleys, small squares, and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the Sacco Valley. The result is a warm, diffused, and timeless glow that restores the village to the appearance it might have had centuries ago.
Lighting begins around 8:00 PM, as volunteers walk through the town to bring the luminous path to life. It is the most evocative time to arrive: you walk up toward the upper part of the village as the electric lights fade and the flickering flames take over.
From 9:30 PM, Patrica becomes a sprawling open-air stage. There is no single main stage: artists are distributed throughout the squares and corners of the historic center, and the public moves freely from one spot to another. Acoustic ensembles, string trios, and roving performances are chosen to maintain the intimate atmosphere of the evening: no intrusive amplification, just close-proximity music enjoyed from just a few meters away.
The program alternates between different genres throughout the night:
A dedicated street food area offers traditional Ciociaria dishes and local gastronomic specialties: it is the perfect opportunity to discover the culinary side of Patrica in an event that blends culture, entertainment, and conviviality.
Born in 2023, the event has grown rapidly to become one of the most recognizable highlights of the Estate Patricana, the summer calendar promoted by the Municipality of Patrica. The formula is simple yet effective, fitting into a tradition now widespread across Lazio—from Vallerano to Lenola—where historic villages entrust candles with the task of telling their story in a different light. In Patrica, the added value is the layout of the town, perched on the slopes of the Lepini Mountains: the uphill path and natural belvederes multiply the scenic effect of the lights.
It is an evening suitable for families and all ages, designed for those who want to discover or rediscover one of the most charming villages in Lazio in a completely different light. The audience is local but also includes visitors from Frosinone, the Ciociaria region, and the province of Latina. Photography enthusiasts will find one of the most photogenic subjects of the Lazio summer here, provided they are equipped for low-light shooting.
The historic center can only be explored on foot, along an uphill route made of stairways and uneven cobblestones: comfortable shoes are essential. It is advisable to arrive early, both to find parking in the lower part of the town and to witness the lighting of the candles, which remains the most emotional moment of the event.
The Municipality of Patrica has not yet released the full calendar for the Estate Patricana 2026: as of mid-July, the administration was still in the phase of collecting sponsorships for summer initiatives. Consequently, the date for the new edition of Illumina - Candles in the Village is not currently official.
Previous editions were held at the beginning of August (August 3rd in 2024, August 2nd in 2025), always on a Saturday night: it is reasonable to expect a similar placement, but confirmation must come from the Municipality or the event's social media channels. It is recommended to check before traveling.
By car: A1 Rome-Naples motorway, Frosinone exit, then SS156 of the Lepini Mountains towards Supino/Patrica (about 15 km from the toll booth). It is about 80 km from Rome. The historic center is closed to traffic during the event: park in the lower part of the town and walk up.
By train: Frosinone station on the Rome-Cassino-Naples line, then bus or taxi to Patrica (about 20 minutes).
Access to the candlelit path and performances in the village is free. Food and drinks in the street food area are for purchase.
Agritourisms and B&Bs in the towns of the Lepini Mountains (Supino, Giuliano di Roma, Ceccano); a wider range of hotels is available in Frosinone, about twenty minutes away by car.
