The Middle Ages come alive at the foot of the Euganean Hills
Il Tempo di Berta is the medieval historical reenactment that every year brings Montegrotto Terme, in the province of Padua, back to the 11th century. The event is inspired by a popular legend: that of Berta, a peasant woman who, on the occasion of the visit of Emperor Henry IV and Empress Bertha of Savoy to the local nobility, obtained a pardon for her imprisoned husband and lands as a gift. When other villagers tried to obtain the same favor, the response was "The time when Berta spun is over", an expression still used today to indicate an unrepeatable era.
For three days, Parco Mostar transforms into a medieval village with encampments, artisans, ancient crafts, and a period tavern. The most anticipated moment is the historical parade, with over four hundred costumed participants, and the Palio delle Sei Contrade, a horse race between the six districts representing the different souls of the village, each with its own colors and traditional crafts.
The reenactment also features falconry, fire shows, a medieval dinner at the inn, and a theatrical performance of Berta's legend. The event, organized by APS Berta, is recognized among the historical reenactments of the Veneto region and involves the entire community of Montegrotto Terme, combining historical memory, entertainment, and popular tradition.
The reenactment Il Tempo di Berta returns to Parco Mostar in Montegrotto Terme from September 11 to 13, 2026, bringing the Middle Ages of the Euganean Hills back to life.
