Four days of art, circus, music, and flavours in the medieval village of Giove
In Giove, a small municipality in the province of Terni overlooking the lower Tiber valley, every late July, Il Sole, la Luna comes to life, one of the longest-running street art events in southern Umbria. Organised by the Pro Loco of Giove with artistic direction by Flavio Frollano, the festival animates the entire historic centre for several days, from the medieval alleys to the famous ducal castle, one of the most picturesque historic residences in the Terni area.
The soul of the festival is the encounter between different disciplines: storytellers, acrobats, magicians, and street artists perform along the town's streets, including clowns, stilt walkers, fire juggling, and balancing acts. The most evocative spot is the Belvedere, where shows begin at sunset against the backdrop of the Umbrian countryside. The performance aspect is complemented by concerts, theatre reviews, and film screenings.
During the evenings, the village fills with stalls: antique fairs, typical food and wine products, natural cosmetics, handicrafts, and second-hand and recycling markets. It's an opportunity to discover the specialities of Umbrian cuisine and to stroll in a festive atmosphere that involves residents and visitors alike.
Il Sole, la Luna combines the popular dimension of village festivals with the quality of performing arts, in a setting—that of Giove and its castle—which alone is worth the visit. An ideal event for those seeking an authentic Umbrian summer, far from the major tourist flows.
For its 30th edition, Il Sole, la Luna confirms the formula that has made the Giove festival famous: street arts, circus, music, and gastronomy spread throughout the historic centre. The village transforms into a meeting point for storytellers, acrobats, and magicians, with shows ranging from folklore to theatre to cinema. Along the alleys, antique fairs, stalls of typical products, natural cosmetics, crafts, and markets accompany the evenings.
The detailed programme for the 30th edition will be published by the Pro Loco of Giove in the weeks preceding the event. The established structure includes, on each of the four evenings (July 30 – August 2):
The names of the artists and precise times will be communicated on the official channels of the Pro Loco of Giove.
Giove is located in the province of Terni, near the border with Lazio. By car: take the Attigliano exit from the A1 Milan-Naples motorway, a few minutes from the village. By train: Attigliano-Bomarzo station on the Rome-Florence line, then a short car journey.
Admission to the festival and the scattered shows in the village is generally free.
Evening shows begin around 7:30 PM at the Belvedere. Comfortable shoes are recommended for the stone alleys of the historic centre.
