The living nativity scene of the Tre Ponti community, held on Epiphany evening in Pompeii
Every year, in the heart of the Christmas season, the community of Tre Ponti — a district on the northeastern outskirts of Pompeii, in the province of Naples — brings «Il Sogno di Benino» to life, a living nativity scene hosted in the Maria SS.ma Immacolata Concezione parish church. This is not just a simple theatrical performance: it is a spiritual path that invites those who enter to rediscover the wonder of the Nativity, in a quiet and intimate atmosphere.
In the Neapolitan nativity tradition, Benino is the sleeping shepherd always found at the top of the nativity scene. According to popular legend, everything we see in the Nativity scene is nothing more than his dream: if Benino were to wake up, the nativity itself would dissolve. The Tre Ponti performance starts from this poetic figure and flips the spectator's perspective: the visitor does not observe the scene from the outside, but enters into Benino's dream and walks through its tableaux, one after another.
The performers from the parish community wear costumes that evoke the 18th-century nativity art, the golden age when the Neapolitan nativity scene became an artistic genre recognized throughout Europe. The result is a series of true living plastic tableaux, meticulously detailed and enhanced by a staging designed to encourage contemplation rather than mere spectacle.
The performance takes place on Epiphany, January 6th, and begins immediately after the 6:30 PM Eucharistic celebration. The choice of date is no coincidence: Epiphany marks the end of the Christmas season and, in the Campania folk tradition, is the day the nativity scene reaches its completion with the arrival of the Three Wise Men. For the Tre Ponti community, «Il Sogno di Benino» is the culmination of the entire Christmas period, the gesture with which the neighborhood bids farewell to the holidays.
The event is promoted by the Maria SS.ma Immacolata Concezione Parish, established in 1972 and led by Father Sebastiano Bifulco, and in January 2026 it reached its fifth edition. Although a recent tradition, it has already become a highly anticipated event: following the success of previous editions, the Tre Ponti community renews every year a meeting described by the organizers themselves as a «tradition of the heart» for the area. The project is born from the voluntary work of parishioners, who take care of costumes, sets, lights, and music.
Campania is one of the Italian regions where the living nativity scene is most widespread, and the Municipality of Pompeii experiences Christmas with particular intensity, between the performances in the city center and those in the districts. «Il Sogno di Benino» represents the most intimate face of this tradition: no grand stage, but a suburban church transformed into a nativity scene and an entire community coming together. A short, free experience, also suitable for families, which offers those visiting Pompeii during the Christmas period an authentic look at popular devotion in Campania.
On January 6, 2026, the day of Epiphany, the community of Tre Ponti in Pompeii staged the fifth edition of the «Il Sogno di Benino» living nativity at the Maria SS.ma Immacolata Concezione parish church.
The performance began immediately after the 6:30 PM Eucharistic celebration and unfolded as a spiritual journey rather than a theatrical show: visitors were guided into the dream of Benino, the little shepherd who, in the Neapolitan nativity tradition, sleeps and dreams of the birth of Jesus.
The performers, dressed in costumes evoking 18th-century nativity art, brought living plastic tableaux to life. Soft lighting, sacred music, and meticulous details accompanied the audience along a path of deep spirituality, confirming the event as the highlight of the Christmas season for the neighborhood.
