The literary festival that lights up the squares of Polignano a Mare
Il Libro Possibile is the literary festival that enlivens Polignano a Mare, in the province of Bari, every summer. It turns the squares and alleys of the historic center overlooking the Adriatic into a series of stages where culture meets the general public. Organized by the Artes Cultural Association and directed by Rosella Santoro, the festival was founded in 2002 and has since become one of the most followed cultural events in Puglia and across Southern Italy.
The formula that made the event famous is that of an "open-air living room": writers, journalists, philosophers, scientists, economists, and artists appear on multiple stages simultaneously, offering spectators the chance to choose from dozens of meetings every evening. Book presentations are intertwined with debates on current events, lectio magistralis, readings, and concerts, in a rhythm that keeps the city alive until late at night. The setting of the Polignano village, with its terraces over the sea and historic squares, is an integral part of the experience.
For several editions, the festival has been held in two Apulian locations: first Polignano a Mare, the historic home of the event, and then Vieste, on the Gargano promontory. This double appointment extends the festival season and brings over three hundred national and international guests to two of the most iconic tourist destinations in Puglia.
Each edition is guided by a central theme that shapes the meetings: from fiction to geopolitics, science to the environment, economics to human rights, and entertainment to the new generations. Over the years, the festival stages have hosted prominent writers, Nobel laureates, investigative journalists, philosophers, and musicians, making Il Libro Possibile a meeting point between literature and civil debate.
One of the hallmarks of Il Libro Possibile is its accessibility: most events are free and open to the public, with only a few presentations requiring a symbolic contribution for charitable initiatives. This choice has made the festival a truly popular event, capable of filling the squares of the Municipality of Polignano a Mare every evening with thousands of people of all ages.
From July 8th to 11th, 2026, Polignano a Mare hosts the twenty-fifth edition of Il Libro Possibile, an anniversary edition directed by Rosella Santoro. The chosen theme is "Speech to Humanity," inspired by the famous final monologue from Charlie Chaplin's "The Great Dictator," which serves as the common thread for four days of meetings on fiction, current affairs, geopolitics, science, economics, the environment, legality, and new generations.
The opening ceremony is scheduled for July 8th on the Lama Monachile bridge, one of the most evocative spots in Polignano. Among the over 300 announced guests are names such as Roberto Saviano, Gianrico Carofiglio, Stefania Auci, Maurizio de Giovanni, Erri De Luca, Eshkol Nevo, Carlo Cottarelli, Ferruccio De Bortoli, Stefano Mancuso, Mario Tozzi, and Luciano Floridi. The grand finale, after the Vieste stage (July 21-25), will be performed by the singer Ditonellapiaga.
As per tradition, most events are free and open to the public. The full program, including times and locations, is available on the official website and the festival app.
Polignano a Mare is located on the Adriatic coast, about 35 km south of Bari. By train, the Polignano a Mare station is served by the Adriatic line (Bari-Lecce); by car, it can be reached via the SS16. The nearest airport is Bari Karol Wojtyła.
Most meetings are free and open to the public. Some presentations may require a symbolic contribution donated to charity. The detailed program with times and locations is published on the official website and the festival app.
Events take place in the historic center: it is advisable to arrive early to find a seat and to get around on foot. In high season, it is recommended to book accommodation in Polignano a Mare or nearby towns well in advance.
