The Ring Joust and the historical reenactment of 1450 in Servigliano
Every August, the village of Servigliano, in the province of Fermo, transforms into a medieval castle for the Torneo Cavalleresco di Castel Clementino. The event has its roots in 1450, when the Abbot of Farfa ceded the area of San Gualtiero to the castle of Servigliano: this abbatial gift has been commemorated without interruption since 1969, making the Tournament one of the longest-running and most deeply rooted historical reenactments in the Marche.
The heart of the festival is the fierce but chivalrous rivalry between the five city districts: Porta Navarra, Porta Marina, San Marco, Paese Vecchio, and Porta Santo Spirito. In the week leading up to the event, each district animates its taverns, decorates the streets with banners and flags, and prepares the horses, in a climate of popular participation reminiscent of stadium cheers.
The most anticipated moment is the Giostra dell'Anello (Ring Joust), a true test of equestrian skill: five knights, one from each district, galloping on an eight-shaped track about 880 meters long, must spear twelve rings of decreasing size, from 8 down to 4.5 centimeters in diameter. Servigliano's unique feature is the competition held in four consecutive rounds, a case unique among Italian jousts, placing it alongside prestigious competitions like those in Foligno and Ascoli Piceno. Since 1990, the race has been held in a modern equestrian facility.
Alongside the sporting competition, the historical reenactment stages over three hundred pre-Renaissance costumes, the result of extensive philological research. The parade, court life scenes, and shows reconstruct the 15th-century Marche setting, offering residents and visitors an authentic journey back in time in the village of Servigliano.
Organized by the Ente Torneo Cavalleresco Castel Clementino with the support of the Municipality of Servigliano, the Tournament attracts thousands of spectators each year, confirming its status as one of the flagship events of the summer in the Marche region and the Fermo hinterland.
The 58th edition of the Torneo Cavalleresco di Castel Clementino will animate Servigliano from August 7th to 16th, 2026, with ten days of open taverns, village entertainment, and growing anticipation for the grand finale. The historical reenactment, with the 1450 costume parade, is scheduled for August 15th and 16th, while the Giostra dell'Anello returns on Sunday, August 16th, with the five knights from the districts of Porta Navarra, Porta Marina, San Marco, Paese Vecchio, and Porta Santo Spirito competing for the Palio.
The detailed program with times, knights, and ladies of the districts will be announced by the Ente Torneo Cavalleresco in the weeks preceding the event on the official website and social media channels.
Servigliano (FM) is located in the Fermo hinterland, reachable from the A14 exit at Pedaso or Porto San Giorgio and then along the Tenna valley. Train station on the Civitanova Marche-Albacina line.
