The Saint Anthony Abbot bonfires in the village of Pietramontecorvino
In the heart of winter, as the days grow shorter, the village of Pietramontecorvino, in the province of Foggia (Apulia), transforms into an open-air stage of fire, music, and devotion. The Fóche de Sant'Antóne are traditional bonfires lit in honor of Saint Anthony Abbot, the protector of animals and the farming world, whose feast day falls on January 17th. These are not merely fires, but towering wood pyres prepared by the residents and ignited at symbolic locations throughout the historic center.
The celebration is part of the rich tapestry of rituals that define the entire Daunian Subappennino. In these lands, fire holds a powerful symbolic meaning: it is a purifying element that wards off evil and illness (the famous "Saint Anthony's fire"), while simultaneously serving as a propitiatory rite linked to agricultural cycles. In the past, the ashes were scattered across the fields to ensure fertility. It is a moment of collective resistance against the winter darkness and symbolically marks the beginning of the Carnival period.
The opening evening centers on the lighting and blessing of the fires in the historic center, including Piazza Cavour, Largo San Matteo, and Via Daunia. Traditional music and dances weave through the flames; over the years, the event has featured folk music groups and Gargano traditions, accompanied by tastings of local dishes and wine to warm the night. It is a festival where, as they say in Pietramontecorvino, art, culture, gastronomy, and music meet to create a celebration for the people.
The devotional heart of the festival is the blessing of domestic animals, performed by the local parish priest, an event that attracts visitors from neighboring towns. Saint Anthony Abbot is the patron saint of animals and rural life, and this ritual renews the deep bond between the community, its faith, and the land every year.
Pietramontecorvino, awarded the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy status and the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club, offers a stunning backdrop with its stone historic center, the Terravecchia, and the Ducal Palace. Experiencing I Fóche de Sant'Antóne means immersing yourself in the authentic soul of the Monti Dauni, among alleys illuminated by the glow of bonfires and the warmth of a community that proudly preserves its roots.
The 2026 edition, scheduled for Friday, January 16 and Saturday, January 17, renewed the bonfire tradition in the historic center of Pietramontecorvino, promoted by the Pro Loco Pietra Montecorvino APS with the patronage of the Municipality and the contribution of local associations.
A two-day event that intertwined faith, Daunian roots, and conviviality in the Orange Flag village of the Monti Dauni.
