Allegorical floats, Perdonanza and the pepper and cod festival that opens Frosolone's August
August 1st is the most anticipated day of the year in Frosolone, a Bandiera Arancione village in the province of Isernia (Molise). A community festival that intertwines devotion, spectacle, and gastronomy, and which every summer attracts visitors from all over Italy.
The heart of the day is the parade of allegorical floats, a tradition born in the seventies. Local groups hand-build the floats using different techniques — from masonry to papier-mâché — to represent Frosolone's customs, traditions, scenes of popular life, ancient rites, and beliefs, creating true itinerant theatrical performances. The procession starts from Corso Vittorio Emanuele and ends in Piazza Alessandro Volta.
In the afternoon, starting at 4 PM, the church of San Rocco hosts the penitential celebration, Holy Mass, procession, and the ritual "passate" of the Perdonanza, a moment of strong religious and identity value for the community.
The evening is dedicated to the cod and pepper festival, the "peperuol e baccalà". The cod is prepared in batter according to an ancient recipe, while the peppers are sautéed in a pan with only extra virgin olive oil. A simple and tasty combination that has become an identity dish of the festival.
The 2026 edition of the August 1st festival in Frosolone (IS) renews the tradition that opens the village's rich event calendar every summer. The day alternates religious and popular moments: the parade of allegorical floats built by local groups, the penitential rite of the Perdonanza at the church of San Rocco, and the evening festival of "peperuol e baccalà". Organized by Pro Loco Frosolone.
Detailed times will be published by Pro Loco Frosolone in the weeks prior.
Frosolone (IS) can be reached by car from the SS17 and the plateau roads. The nearest train station is Isernia, connected to the village by bus. On August 1st, the town center is closed to traffic for the parade: it's best to park in the external areas.
Every year on August 1st. Perdonanza rite from the afternoon (from 4 PM), festival in the evening.
The parade is free; the festival stands are ticketed. Info on the Pro Loco Frosolone Facebook page.
