A multidisciplinary festival exploring Mediterranean aesthetics in Capo Peloro
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Horcynus Festival is the major summer cultural event in Messina, Sicily, hosted in the evocative Horcynus Orca Park in Capo Peloro. Located at the island's northeastern tip, in the district of Torre Faro, it is the point where the Strait separates Sicily from Calabria. The name pays homage to Horcynus Orca, the famous novel by Stefano D'Arrigo set in these very waters, inheriting its poetic gaze on the sea and its people.
Born in the early 2000s, the festival has established itself as one of the most original cultural events in Southern Italy, defining itself as a multidisciplinary festival on Mediterranean aesthetics. The program weaves together numerous expressive forms:
The Horcynus Festival is promoted by the Horcynus Orca Foundation together with the Community Foundation of Messina and is linked to the human and territorial development strategies of the Messina area. More than just a showcase for performances, it is a laboratory that brings artistic research, social innovation, and attention to the suburbs into dialogue, articulated in sections dedicated to cultural experimentation, the dissemination of new development practices, and youth training.
Traditionally with free admission, the festival takes place in the heart of summer, between July and August, in a unique landscape: the strip of land at Capo Peloro, between the Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas, with the Ganzirri lakes and the lighthouse overlooking Calabria. In addition to the main venue in the Municipality of Messina, some initiatives also involve other locations in the area, such as Novara di Sicilia, in a design that enhances the entire Peloritani region.
The 2026 Horcynus Festival is expected at the Horcynus Orca Park in Capo Peloro, Messina, during the traditional summer window between July and August. The exact dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the organizers. The Horcynus Summer School is confirmed, however, scheduled from July 20 to August 1, 2026, and dedicated to the conservation and restoration of contemporary artworks, demonstrating the continuity of the Horcynus Orca Foundation's activities. To find out the final lineup, the cinema, music, theatre, and Mediterranean culture sections, and how to participate, it is recommended to follow updates on the official website and the Foundation's social media channels.
The Horcynus Orca Park is located in Capo Peloro, in the Torre Faro district, at the northeastern tip of Messina. By car, it can be reached from the city along the coastal road (about 13 km from the centre). By train, the reference station is Messina Centrale, from where you can continue with local transport to Torre Faro. The nearest airport is Reggio Calabria, while Catania Fontanarossa serves the area with broader connections.
Festival events are traditionally free of charge. For the updated program, times, and any reservations for workshops and screenings, it is advisable to check the official website horcynusorca.it or the social media channels of the Horcynus Orca Foundation.
