The rites of Holy Week and the centuries-old penitential Procession of the Mysteries on Good Friday in Trani
The Holy Week of Trani, in the heart of the Barletta-Andria-Trani (BT) province, is one of the most intense spiritual and cultural events in Adriatic Puglia. In the town of Trani, home to the famous Romanesque Cathedral by the sea, the days leading up to Easter transform into a long journey of faith, memory, and popular participation that involves the entire community.
The highlight is the Good Friday Procession of the Mysteries, which sets off from the Cathedral Basilica in the late evening. The procession consists of fourteen sacred statues representing the various moments of the Passion of Christ: the statues are carried on the shoulders of the city's numerous confraternities, following a tradition rooted in the Spanish era. The black banner, a symbol of mourning and penance, leads the procession.
The procession is organized by the Archconfraternity of the Bianchi under the title of the Most Holy Sacrament, in collaboration with the Cathedral Chapter. Documented since 1572, the rite originated as an act of reparation linked to the Eucharistic Miracle passed down by Trani's tradition. It was only in the 17th century, during Spanish rule, that the statues depicting the stages and figures of the Passion were added, carried on shoulders—often barefoot—by the confreres as a sign of devotion.
After departing from the Cathedral, the procession winds through the historic center along Via Beltrani, Piazza Lambert, Via Mario Pagano, Via Sant'Agostino, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, Via Marsala, Piazza della Libertà, Via Ognissanti, Via Prologo, Piazza Cesare Battisti, and Via San Nicola, before returning to the Cathedral Basilica. Passing through the illuminated alleys and squares of the old town, just steps from the harbor, creates a solemn and moving atmosphere that draws worshippers and visitors from across Puglia.
The Procession of the Mysteries is the heart of a broader program marking the entire Holy Week, from Palm Sunday to the Easter Vigil, with solemn celebrations in the Cathedral presided over by the Archbishop. In Trani, these days are not merely a religious event, but a heritage of popular traditions that renews the deep bond between the city, its history, and its faith every year.
The celebrations, promoted by the Cathedral Chapter and the Archconfraternity of the Bianchi, accompanied the community from Palm Sunday to Easter. The highlight was the Procession of the Mysteries on Friday, April 3, 2026, which began at 7:30 PM from the Cathedral Basilica. The fourteen statues of the Passion of Christ crossed the historic center of Trani amidst great participation from the faithful and visitors.
The Procession of Our Lady of Sorrows, traditionally scheduled for the night hours, was cancelled due to bad weather.
Trani is served by the Adriatic railway line (Bologna-Bari-Lecce) and the A14 motorway (Trani exit). The nearest airports are Bari-Palese and Bari (approx. 45 km).
All celebrations and the Procession of the Mysteries are free to attend.
During the Good Friday procession, the historic center is subject to traffic restrictions, including parking bans and road closures; we recommend reaching the area on foot. Don't miss the view of the illuminated Cathedral by the sea.
