Rites, processions, and brotherhoods of the Sicilian Easter tradition

The Holy Week in Siculiana, a small village in the province of Agrigento, Sicily, is one of the oldest and most attended manifestations of popular religious devotion in the region. The first records of the Crucifixion and Deposition rites date back to the 1600s, due to the presence of a Calvary in the town. More definitive evidence appears from the last twenty years of the 19th century, when Archpriest Don Giovanni Moscato commissioned the essential items for the Holy Triduum rites: the majestic 1891 Cross, the 1877 wooden sepulchral urn, the statue of the Virgin of Sorrows (Addolorata) from 1884, and the statues for the 1913 sermons.
The heart of the rites lies in the six brotherhoods that animate the processions. The oldest are the Confraternity of the Ecce Homo, likely contemporary to the original Calvary, and the Maria Addolorata Sisters, established in the 1960s when young women took charge of the Madonna's statue. In the 1990s, these were joined by the brotherhoods of Saint John, Mary Magdalene, Saint Peter, and Saint Michael the Archangel. Each brotherhood parades in its traditional attire, marking the stages of the Passion.
The rites wind through the heart of the Municipality of Siculiana, dominated by the Baroque Mother Church with its unmistakable red dome towering over the town, and the Sanctuary of the Most Holy Crucifix, which houses the venerated 17th-century black Crucifix. Visiting Siculiana during Holy Week means immersing yourself in an authentic atmosphere of devotion, sounds, the scent of Easter pastries, and an entire community uniting around its traditions.
The 2026 edition of the Holy Week in Siculiana will follow the customary sequence of rites, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. At the moment, no official program with detailed times and routes has been published. It is recommended to check the channels of the parish and the Municipality of Siculiana for updates.
