About Holy Week Pompei

Every spring, Pompei celebrates Holy Week around its Pontifical Shrine: from the blessing of the olive branches on Palm Sunday to the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday, including the Chrism Mass, the Mass of the Lord's Supper, and the two Good Friday Stations of the Cross. Eight days of celebrations presided over by the Archbishop Prelate and brought to life by the parishes and associations of this Marian city in the province of Naples.

Holy Week in the City of the Rosary

In Pompei, in the province of Naples, Holy Week is more than just a liturgical appointment: it is the moment when the entire city gathers around the Pontifical Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of the Holy Rosary, the grand Marian complex commissioned by Blessed Bartolo Longo in the late 19th century and now a destination for pilgrims from across Campania and far beyond. For eight days, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, Piazza Bartolo Longo and the San Giovanni XXIII square become an open-air stage for popular devotion that blends with the solemnity of pontifical celebrations.

An Eight-Day Journey

The journey begins with the blessing of the olive branches in the San Giovanni XXIII square, followed by a procession leading up to the Basilica for Holy Mass. It is the iconic image that opens the week each year: thousands of faithful holding olive branches, crossing the square in a procession between the two wings of the colonnade.

At the heart of the week is the Chrism Mass, concelebrated in the Basilica by all the priests of the Marian Prelature around the Archbishop. This is the moment when the sacred chrism, the oil of catechumens, and the oil of the sick are consecrated, which will accompany the community's sacraments throughout the year.

The Easter Triduum then marks the most intense days. On Holy Thursday, the Mass of the Lord's Supper (Coena Domini) is followed in the evening by community adoration at the Altar of Repose, extending prayer late into the night. Good Friday features a double Stations of the Cross: one in the afternoon in the San Giovanni XXIII square, animated by the Catholic Action youth groups and Agesci, and an evening one in Piazza Bartolo Longo, entrusted to the parish community, which brings the meditation on the Passion outside the Basilica walls and into the city. Between the two, in the late afternoon, the Celebration of the Lord's Passion takes place.

Holy Saturday opens with the "Hour of the Mother," a moment of Marian prayer that takes on special significance in Pompei, and culminates late in the evening with the Easter Vigil, presided over by the Archbishop Prelate. On Easter Sunday, the solemn Resurrection Mass in the Basilica concludes the journey.

A Shrine, A City

What makes the Pompei Holy Week unique is the overlap between parish life and the shrine's dimension. Pompei is a territorial prelature, led by an Archbishop Prelate who is also the Pontifical Delegate for the Shrine: the celebrations thus have an episcopal tone, involving the entire local clergy, yet they remain deeply popular, supported by the confraternities, lay movements, and local scouts.

The calendar also intertwines with the devotion of the Twenty Saturdays, the cycle of Marian prayer typical of Pompei that spans the year and falls punctually on Holy Saturdayโ€”a detail that perfectly illustrates how, in this city, the Rosary and Easter are woven into the same fabric.

Around the Celebrations

  • The Shrine: The Basilica, the bell tower standing over eighty meters tall, and the Shrine Museum can be visited during Holy Week, subject to celebration schedules.
  • The Ruins: The Archaeological Park of Pompei is just a few minutes' walk from the square, and Easter week is traditionally one of the busiest times of the year.
  • The City: Piazza Bartolo Longo and the surrounding streets are home to pastry shops and boutiques where you can find pastiera and casatiello, the traditional cakes and ritual breads of the Campanian Easter.

How to Participate

All celebrations are free and open to the public. During the Triduum, and especially for the Easter Vigil, the Basilica reaches capacity quickly; it is advisable to arrive well in advance. The processions and the Stations of the Cross take place outdoors and are open to anyone who wishes to join the cortege.

Holy Week 2026 in Pompei

From March 29 to April 5, 2026, the Marian city experienced its journey toward Easter around the Pontifical Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of the Holy Rosary. All major celebrations were presided over by the Archbishop Prelate and Pontifical Delegate, Monsignor Tommaso Caputo.

The opening, on Palm Sunday morning, featured the blessing of the olive branches in the San Giovanni XXIII square and the procession toward the Basilica. On Wednesday, the Chrism Mass gathered all the priests of the Prelature around the Prelate for the consecration of the holy oils. The Triduum unfolded between the Mass of the Lord's Supper and the Adoration at the Altar of Repose on Holy Thursday, the double Stations of the Cross on Good Fridayโ€”the afternoon one animated by the Catholic Action youth and Agesci in the square, and the evening one by the parish community in Piazza Bartolo Longoโ€”and the Celebration of the Lord's Passion.

Holy Saturday alternated between the "Hour of the Mother" in the morning, the sixteenth of the Twenty Saturdays in the afternoon, and the Easter Vigil late in the evening. On Easter Sunday, April 5, the solemn Resurrection Mass at 11:00 AM in the Basilica concluded the week.
