Easter rites and the nocturnal Procession of the Black Christ
In the heart of the Bari province, the town of Conversano hosts one of the most intense and deeply felt Holy Week celebrations in Puglia. For several days, from Holy Thursday to the Easter Vigil, the historic center transforms into a stage for popular faith, featuring nocturnal processions, traditional chants, and age-old rites that involve the entire community.
The absolute symbol of these days is the Black Christ, an ancient wooden crucifix housed in the Church of Santa Maria dell'Isola, about a kilometer from the historic center. At 4:00 AM on Good Friday, following a solemn vigil, the sacred image is carried in procession through the city's still-dark streets. The crucifix, resting on cushions covered in precious fabrics, moves slowly to the sound of flutes and drums, while the faithful approach for a devotional kiss during numerous stops. At dawn, the haunting chant of the Miserere rises, marking the most moving moment of the entire Conversano Holy Week.
This tradition is safeguarded by the SS. Passione Confraternity, which dates back to 1690. The melodies of the Miserere, performed by local choirs, accompany the sacred images alongside city bands, creating a sonic tapestry that is an integral part of Conversano's religious identity.
Holy Thursday opens with the Chrism Mass in the Cathedral Basilica and continues in the evening with the Mass of the Lord's Supper and the traditional pilgrimage between city churches to visit the altars of repose and view the Mysteries and the Addolorata. On Good Friday, after the dawn Procession of the Black Christ, the Procession of the Addolorata del Carmine—"Mary seeking her Son"—takes place at 11:00 AM. In the evening, the solemn Procession of the Holy Wood and the Holy Thorn reunites with the Mysteries and the Addolorata in a moment of great public participation. Holy Saturday, a day of silence and anticipation, culminates in the Easter Vigil at the Cathedral.
Holy Week in Conversano is part of the rich landscape of Puglian Easter rites, alongside those of Taranto, Molfetta, Bisceglie, and Canosa di Puglia. The nocturnal Procession of the Black Christ, with its intimate atmosphere and the charm of the streets traversed in the silence of the night, represents one of the most authentic experiences for those visiting Puglia during the Easter period.
The 2026 calendar began on Thursday, April 2, and concluded with Easter Sunday on April 5. The most anticipated moment was the Procession of the Black Christ at 4:00 AM on Good Friday, April 3, from the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell'Isola toward the historic center. Throughout the days, the Procession of the Addolorata del Carmine, the Procession of the Holy Wood and the Holy Thorn, and the procession of the Mysteries took place, accompanied by the Miserere chant and local bands.
Conversano is located in the hinterland of the Bari province, about 30 km from the regional capital. By car, it can be reached via the SS16, taking the exit for Conversano. By train, the city is served by the Ferrovie del Sud Est line connecting Bari to Putignano.
All processions and celebrations are free and open to the public. For the Procession of the Black Christ, which departs at 4:00 AM on Good Friday from the Church of Santa Maria dell'Isola, we recommend dressing warmly for the night temperatures and respecting the solemnity of the faithful.
