Passion rites and Good Friday Mysteries in the heart of the Enna province

In the village of Villarosa, in the province of Enna, deep within inland Sicily, Holy Week represents the pinnacle of the community's religious and cultural identity. The rites, passed down through generations, involve the entire town and culminate in the evocative Good Friday celebrations, when the streets of the historic center fill with faithful, confraternity members, and visitors.
The heart of the Villarosa Holy Week is the solemn parade of the Christ at the Column, carried on shoulders and accompanied by the figures of Saint John and Our Lady of Sorrows. The rite involves the town's seven confraternities, whose banners, traditional vestments, and deep spirituality make the procession particularly striking: the male confraternities of Saint John, the Most Holy Crucifix, the Holy Sepulchre, Saint Barbara, and Saint James, along with the two female confraternities of Our Lady of the Chain and Our Lady of Sorrows.
On Good Friday morning, following the Via Crucis led by the confraternities, the Crucifixion at Calvary is re-enacted. In the late afternoon, around 4:30 PM, the Deposition takes place: the body of Christ is taken down from the Cross and placed in the urn. From here, the long and poignant procession of the urn of the Dead Christ begins, winding from the Church of the Immaculate Conception through most of the town to the four crossroads.
The celebrations conclude on Easter Sunday, when the festive encounter between the Risen Christ and the Madonna takes place in the afternoon at the 'quattro canti' (the four main crossroads of the center). It is a moment of joy and resurrection that dissolves the dramatic tension of the previous days and seals the faith of an entire community.
The rites revolve around the village's places of worship: the Mother Church of Saint James the Greater, built in 1763 by the Notarbartolo dukes, and the Church of the Immaculate Conception, once known as 'a chisulidda', from which the urn procession departs. The Villarosa Holy Week also preserves the ancient tradition of the 'ladata', a narrative chant of the Passion of Christ, alongside the visiting of the 'sepulchres' set up in the churches and costumed dramatizations of Gospel episodes.
Part of the rich landscape of Holy Week rites in Sicily, the Villarosa celebration testifies to the deep bond between faith, memory, and identity in a small inland village. The choral participation, the solemnity of the processions, and the evocative power of the handed-down gestures make these days an authentic and immersive experience, far from tourist circuits and capable of revealing the truest soul of inland Sicily.
The Holy Week rites in Villarosa are renewed every year during the days leading up to Easter. For 2026, the town's confraternities have not yet released the official program and procession times. Based on the liturgical calendar, Holy Week 2026 falls between Palm Sunday on March 29 and Easter Sunday on April 5, with Good Friday on April 3. We invite you to check with local parishes for confirmation of dates and times as the celebrations approach.
The rites take place in the historic center of Villarosa (EN), between the Mother Church of Saint James the Greater, the Church of the Immaculate Conception, and the town's four crossroads.
During Holy Week, with the climax on Good Friday and the conclusion on Easter Sunday. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced.
